
Eastern League announces weekly award winners

PORTLAND, ME - The Eastern League is pleased to announce the Major League Baseball Advanced Media selections for the Eastern League Pitcher and Player of the Week for the week ending August 20th:
Reading Phillies first baseman/outfielder Gary Burnham has been named the Eastern League's Player of the Week for the week ending August 20th. Burnham, a native of South Windsor, Connecticut, had an excellent week for the R-Phils, hitting .500 (12-for-24) with one double, four home runs, nine RBI, seven runs scored, five walks and a 1.042 slugging percentage in seven games. The 5'11", 219 lb. slugger became part of the Reading record books on Saturday when he hit his 54th career home run as a member of the R-Phils in the first game of a doubleheader against New Britain, becoming the Reading all-time home run leader. Gary, who was also named the Eastern League Player of the Week for the week ending July 16th and was selected as a Southern Division All-Star for the Eastern League All-Star Game earlier this season, was signed as a free agent by the Philadelphia Phillies on May 24, 2006.

Tyler Clippard, a right-handed starting pitcher for the Trenton Thunder, is the Eastern League's Pitcher of the Week for the week ending August 20th. The 6'4", 170 lb. hurler made one start for Trenton last week and was 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA. Clippard made his only appearance of the week at Harrisburg last Thursday and became the first pitcher in the 13-year history of the Trenton franchise to throw a no-hitter. The 21-year old, who was ranked by Baseball America as the 10th best prospect in the Yankees organization entering this season, struck out nine batters and walked four in nine innings of work to improve his record to 10-10 on the season. Tyler, who was the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week for the weeks ending June 25th and July 9th and was a Northern Division All-Star for the 2006 Eastern League All-Star Game, was selected by the New York Yankees in the ninth round of the June 2003 draft out of Trinity High School in Florida.
