
Nuts Let Leads Slip in 7-5 Loss

Bakersfield, CA. - The Nuts surrendered two leads in the 7-5 loss to the Blaze on Friday night at Sam Lynn Ballpark.
Chris O'Dowd gave the Nuts (4-10, 27-58) the lead in the eighth inning against Jimmy Moran (W, 6-4) and the Blaze (9-6, 54-31). In the bottom half of the eighth, the Blaze came back with three runs to send the Nuts to their sixth straight loss. John Keck (L, 0-2) allowed the tying run to score when Sammy Diaz ripped a single. Jeff Gelalich smacked a two-out, RBI single and Sean Buckley added insurance with another RBI base hit.
The Nuts had taken a 4-0 lead in the top off the fifth inning. Dean Espy recorded a RBI double and a run scored in the second. In the fifth, Pat Valaika knocked in a run and scored on a wild pitch.
Ryan Carpenter started for the Nuts and worked out of a bases load jam in the first before working the next three innings without giving up a hit. In the bottom of the fifth, Carpenter allowed four runs capped by a two-run shot by Buckley. Carpenter worked six innings, gave up eight hits and four runs while striking out four and walking two.
In the second game of the four-game set, the Nuts will have righty Devin Burke on the mound. Drew Cisco, a righty, will toss for the Blaze. First pitch is scheduled for 7:50 p.m. Coverage on ModestoNuts.com will start at 7:45 p.m.
