Giants Fall 17-6 in Front of Independence Day Sellout Crowd

SAN JOSE - The Stockton Ports scored 15 runs over the fifth and sixth innings en route to a 17-6 thrashing of the San Jose Giants on Friday evening. San Jose saw their season-high winning streak snapped at six games in front of an Independence Day sellout crowd of 4,649 fans at Municipal Stadium.

Alberto Robles (2-for-4, 2 2B, 3 RBI) had a pair of doubles and drove home three runs to lead the Giants offensively in defeat. Blake Miller (2-for-4, 2B) added two hits, including his team-leading 20th double of the season.

Stockton scored single runs in the first and second innings to take the early lead before blowing the game open with an eight-run top of the fifth. The Ports then scored seven more times in the sixth as the 17 runs allowed by San Jose was a season-high. Stockton shortstop and leadoff batter Daniel Robertson finished 3-for-4 with a double, a home run and six RBI's while Matt Olson clubbed his league-leading 24th home run of the season.

In the top of the first, Robertson started the game with a double and then scored after back-to-back groundouts. Then in the second, the Ports loaded the bases with one out on two singles and a walk before Robertson's sacrifice fly made it 2-0.

Stockton starting pitcher Jake Sanchez faced the minimum 12 hitters over the first four innings allowing only a single to Elliott Blair in the bottom of the third. The Ports then erupted in the fifth as 10 consecutive batters reached base - with eight scoring runs - against Giants pitchers Chris Stratton and Ryan Bradley. After Aaron Shipman lined out to begin the inning, Robertson drew a walk and moved to second on a wild pitch. After Colin Walsh walked, Olson clubbed an RBI double to deep right for a 3-0 advantage. Back-to-back RBI singles from Renato Nunez and Ryon Healy made it 5-0 and ended Stratton's night. Bradley was summoned the bullpen, but the first five batters he faced also reached safely. After a walk to Boog Powell, Bobby Crocker delivered an RBI single to make it 6-0. Ryan Gorton followed with a two-RBI single for an 8-0 lead and then after Shipman walked, Robertson capped the fifth-inning scoring with another two-run single. The Ports sent 13 batters to the plate in the inning and scored eight runs on six hits.

The Giants broke through in the bottom of the fifth with three runs of their own. A leadoff double from Miller was followed by a single off the bat of Brian Ragira to put runners on the corners. Brandon Bednar then hit a grounder to shortstop that was misplayed by Robertson for an error. Miller scored on the play as Bednar was credited with an RBI. Blair was up next and he hit a sacrifice fly to right before Robles produced a two-out RBI double to cut the lead to 10-3.

Stockton though came back with another long rally in the top of the sixth. Still facing Bradley, the inning began with Nunez crushing a solo home run to deep left. After Healy singled and Bradley recorded back-to-back fly outs, Gorton singled to extend the inning. Shipman followed with an RBI single and then Robertson belted a three-run homer to left to make it 15-3. The onslaught continued when Walsh singled before Olson stepped to the plate and launched a fly ball over the fence in right center for the third home run of the inning and a 17-3 Ports lead.

Stratton (4 1/3 IP, 6 H, 7 R, 7 ER, 4 BB, 3 SO) and Bradley (1 1/3 IP, 10 H, 10 R, 10 ER, 2 BB, 0 SO) combined to allow all 17 runs for the Giants. Stratton (5-8) was saddled with the loss.

The Giants produced another three-run inning in the bottom of the seventh, but would still fall well short in the contest. Bednar led off with a double into the left center field gap before Blair drew a walk. After Trevor Brown flied out, Robles ripped a double down the left field line to score both Bednar and Blair. Then with two outs, Chuckie Jones lined a single to left plating Robles to bring San Jose to within 17-6.

Sanchez (2-0) picked-up the win for Stockton after tossing seven innings with six runs (four earned) and eight hits allowed. He walked one and struck out five. Michael Ynoa finished the game with two hitless innings of relief.

Notes: San Jose's previous season-high for runs allowed was 12 ... The 18 hits surrendered by the Giants and 11-run margin of defeat were also season-highs ... Stockton out-hit San Jose 18-8 on Friday ... Robles has six RBI's in his last two games (4-for-9) ... The Ports lead the league with 108 home runs ... Stockton was 8-for-13 with runners in scoring position ... Stephen Johnson (1 1/3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 SO), Mason McVay (1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 SO) and Tyler Mizenko (1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 SO) combined for 3 1/3 scoreless innings to end the game for the Giants ... With the loss, San Jose (42-43) failed to move above .500 for the first time since the opening week of the season (April 7) ... Friday marked the second sellout of the season at Municipal Stadium.

On Deck: The Giants and Ports continue their four-game series on Saturday evening with first pitch at Municipal Stadium scheduled for 6:30 PM. Kendry Flores (3-5, 4.84 ERA) is slated to start on the mound for San Jose while Stockton is expected to counter with Tim Atherton (6-2, 5.04 ERA).
