Modesto Nuts News Release
The Modesto Nuts snapped their eight-game losing skid with an 8-4 victory over the Fresno Grizzlies Thursday night at Chukchansi Park.
Robert Perez Jr. gave the Nuts their first lead of the series with a two-run home run against Grizzlies starter Sam Weatherly.
The Nuts added three more runs in the third. Noelvi Marte singled in Eric Jones, who doubled to start the inning. After Alberto Rodriguez doubled, Justin Lavey hit a sacrifice fly to plate the second run of the frame. Finally, the next batter, Perez Jr., ripped a run-scoring double to left to put Modesto ahead 5-0.
Modesto broke the game open with three additional runs in the fifth when Matt Scheffler crushed a bases clearing three-run double to left center field.
All eight runs were charged to Weatherly (3-6), who surrendered eight hits and struck out 10 in five innings.
Meanwhile, Nuts starter Connor Phillips allowed just one hit and faced the minimum through the first four innings. However, the Grizzlies tagged him for four runs in his final inning in the sixth, three of which scored on a Colin Simpson home run.
Phillips (4-3) allowed four runs on six hits in five and two-thirds frames, while striking out two and not walking a batter.
Relievers Juan Mercedes and Nolan Hoffman combined to shutout Fresno over the final three and a third innings to close out the 8-4 Nuts victory.
Alberto Rodriguez paced the Nuts offense, going 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles, and Perez led the team with three RBI.
The Nuts try to even the series in game four of the set Friday night. Right-hander Kelvin Nunez takes the mound for the Nuts, opposed by Grizzlies right-hander Andrew DiPiazza. First pitch is scheduled for 6:50 p.m. at Chukchansi Park.
