Giants Drop Second Straight to Ports, 10-5

The Giants suffered their second straight defeat to the Stockton Ports with a 10-5 loss on Thursday night at Excite Ballpark. Stockton built a 6-0 lead in the contest and never looked back withstanding a 14-hit output from San Jose at the plate. The Giants (44-25) have now dropped two of the first three games in the series to the Ports.

Stockton jumped on league ERA leader Wil Jensen early scoring twice in the top of the first inning to take a 2-0 lead. Lawrence Butler hit the first pitch of the game to the fence in deep right center for a double. After a passed ball moved Butler to third and Brayan Buelvas struck out, T.J. Schofield-Sam stepped to the plate and lined an RBI single into right to produce the first run. Schofield-Sam was later thrown out at second attempting to steal, but Jose Rivas followed with a deep home run to left center for a 2-0 Ports advantage.

Jensen settled down and kept Stockton off the scoreboard over the next three innings pitching around a two-out triple in the second before tossing back-to-back 1-2-3 frames in the third and fourth. Meanwhile, the Giants managed five hits - all singles - over the first four innings, but left five on base and still trailed by a 2-0 margin.

Jensen began the top of the fifth with a strikeout of Joshwan Wright marking the eighth consecutive hitter that he retired. However, the next five Ports batters would reach safely with four eventually coming home as Jensen was knocked out of the game. A one-out walk to Danny Bautista started the rally before #9 hitter Robert Puason stepped to the plate and launched a two-run home run to left center. The homer, Puason's second of the season, stretched the Stockton lead to 4-0. Back-to-back singles from Butler and Buelvas followed before Schofield-Sam was hit by a pitch to load the bases and end Jensen's night. Abel Adames was summoned from the bullpen and he was greeted by Rivas, who blasted a fly ball off the fence in right center. The hit went for a long single as two more runs scored to make it 6-0.

The Giants got two runs back in the bottom of the fifth, but wouldn't get any closer. Luis Toribio delivered an RBI double to plate the first San Jose run before Marco Luciano came up with two outs and doubled to deep right plating another run to bring the Giants to within 6-2. Jairo Pomares followed with a walk, but Alex Canario then popped out to end the inning.

The Ports then took advantage of four consecutive walks in the next half-inning to score three more times and push their lead to 9-2. Adames walked Wright, Bautista and Puason back-to-back-to-back with one out to load the bases and then issued another walk to Butler forcing home a run. Brooks Crawford entered from the bullpen and promptly struck out Buelvas for the second out, but Schofield-Sam followed with a line drive single into right scoring two more for a 9-2 Stockton cushion.

Harrison Freed crushed a 438-foot solo home run to deep center in the bottom of the sixth to make the score 9-3. The home run was part of a four-hit night at the plate for Freed.

The Ports then plated their 10th and final run of the game when two singles and a catchers interference loaded the bases in the seventh before Crawford uncorked a wild pitch to bring home the runner from third.

In the bottom of the seventh, Casey Schmitt doubled into the left field corner with one out before Luciano singled to put runners on the corners. Pomares then singled sharply up the middle to plate Schmitt with the first run of the inning. After Canario struck out, Freed lined a single into left center scoring Luciano to cut the deficit to 10-5. However, Pomares was thrown out at third on the play by Stockton center fielder Junior Perez to end the inning and the Giants wouldn't advance another runner into scoring position for the remainder of the game.

GIANTS NOTES

Series Update

After the Giants won the series opener on Tuesday, Stockton has bounced back with consecutive victories scoring a total of 16 runs in the last two games. San Jose has lost eight out of their last 10 home games (13-2 in their previous 15 games at Excite Ballpark).

Freed's Perfect Night

Harrison Freed led the Giants offensively on Thursday with a perfect 4-for-4 night at the plate. Freed singled three times, in addition to his sixth-inning solo home run. He has now hit four home runs this season.

Multi-Hits

Marco Luciano (3-for-5, 2B, RBI), Luis Toribio (2-for-5, 2B, RBI, SB), Casey Schmitt (2-for-5, 2B) and Fabian Pena (2-for-4) also had multi-hit games for the Giants. San Jose out-hit Stockton 14-11.

On The Mound

Wil Jensen (4-1) suffered his first loss of the year after yielding a season-high six runs (all earned) on seven hits over 4 1/3 innings. He walked one and struck out five. It marked the first time all season that Jensen had allowed more than three runs in a start.

The Giants and Ports continue their series on Friday evening with first pitch at Excite Ballpark set for 6:30 PM. Kyle Harrison is San Jose's scheduled starting pitcher.
