Lansing Lugnuts News Release
LANSING, Mich. - The Lansing Lugnuts (25-41) turned in a strong relief effort and received home runs from Lawrence Butler and Jack Winkler before falling in ten innings, 6-4, to the Beloit Sky Carp (31-34) in front of 6,291 on Thursday night at Jackson® Field™.
The result closed out the 66-game first half of the Midwest League schedule, resetting each team's record to 0-0 for the start of the 66-game second half on Friday.
Nuts starter Joey Estes allowed two runs in the first and one in the third before departing at 2 2/3 innings, having thrown 62 pitches. He was followed by the succession of Diego Granado (2 1/3 innings), Brock Whittlesey (three innings) and Angello Infante (two innings), who combined to blank the Sky Carp through the ninth.
Given the opportunity to wipe out a 3-1 deficit, the Lugnuts tied the score on Butler's sixth home run of the season, a solo shot in the fourth, and Winkler's second of the year, a drive in the sixth that bounced out of the glove of leaping left fielder Tevin Mitchell and over the top of the wall.
Butler seemed to give the Lugnuts a chance to walk off in the bottom of the ninth with a leadoff double to right, but tried for third base when second baseman Cody Morissette spiked a relay throw and was thrown out.
The Sky Carp responded with a three-run rally in the tenth inning against Infante, keyed by a two-out, two-run single by Dalvy Rosario.
In the bottom of the tenth, the Nuts crept one run closer on a fielding error by Morissette. But Chandler Jozwiak induced a groundout to third from Euribiel Ángeles with Jared McDonald aboard and Tyler Soderstrom looming on deck, ending the game.
Butler finished 3-for-4 with two doubles and a home run while Winkler went 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
In the loss, the Lugnuts also had Gabriel Maciel and Lazaro Armenteros, two of the club's four outfielders on the active roster, depart the game due to injury precaution.
Friday night, the fourth game of the six-game series, is Page Fence Giants Night with a Bud Fowler Bobblehead Giveaway and LAFCU Fireworks postgame. First pitch between Lansing right-hander Blake Beers (1.08 ERA) and Beloit southpaw Dax Fulton (5.12 ERA) is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit lansinglugnuts.com or call (517) 485-4500.
