Clutch Carp Close First Half with 10-Inning Win
June 23, 2022 - Midwest League (MWL)
Beloit Sky Carp News Release
The Beloit Sky Carp ended the first half of the Midwest League campaign in grand fashion, defeating Lansing 6-4 in 10 innings in front of a raucous Thursday night crowd at Jackson Field.
With two outs and two strikes on Dalvy Rosario in the top of the 10th, the Beloit shortstop grounded a single up the middle to score two to put Beloit ahead for good. Victor Mesa Jr followed with an RBI single to put the Sky Carp ahead 6-3 going to the bottom of the 10th.
In the bottom half, Chandler Jozwiak collected his first save of the season after the Lugnuts' automatic runner scored on an error.
Lansing's comeback attempt fell just short, as the Sky Carp led the game from the jump.
Beloit scored two runs in the first, courtesy of back-to-back RBI singles from Ynmanol Marinez and Davis Bradshaw. After Lansing scored in the second, the Sky Carp pushed the lead to 3-1 in the third with another RBI knock from Bradshaw.
Lansing crawled back into the game via the power of the longball. Lawrence Butler launched a solo homer out of the ballpark off Pat Monteverde in the fourth to cut the lead to 3-2.
In the sixth, Monteverde ran into bad luck, as a high fly ball off the bat of Jack Winkler bounced out of left fielder Tevin Mitchell's glove and over the left field wall to tie the game at three.
Monteverde's day ended after six innings, as the lefty turned in another quality start: allowing just those three runs while striking out seven.
The extra-innings win boosts Beloit's record to 6-1 in extra-inning games and 31-34 to close the first half. The Sky Carp were 15 games under .500 on May 20th but have used a 19-7 record across the last five series to climb out of the hole.
The second half begins tomorrow with game four of the six game series against the Lugnuts at 7:05 eastern time. Fans can tune in for free using the Big Radio app.
