Gary SouthShore RailCats manager Greg Tagert was named Northern League Manager of the Year as voted on by select league personnel and players.
Tagert, who led the RailCats to a league-best 57-39 (.594) record in 2009, is taking home the N.L. Manager of the Year honors for the second time in three years. In his five seasons as manager of Gary, he has led the RailCats to an unprecedented five straight Northern League Championship Series appearances, including winning the league title in 2005 and 2007. In the post-season, he has led the 'Cats to a 7-2 playoff series record, including a perfect 6-0 record in decisive game fives.
Tagert, who inherited a last place team when he joined Gary SouthShore in 2005, has a 276-205 (.574) regular season mark and 23-19 (.548) playoff record with the RailCats. He came to the RailCats after nine seasons in the Frontier League where he was the all-time leader in victories posting a 412-336 (.551) record. Tagert eclipsed the 600 win mark in 2008 and has a .560 lifetime winning percentage (688-541). He has incredibly posted a better than .500 record in all 14 of his seasons as a professional manager.
As well as leading the team on the field, Tagert serves as the Director of Player Procurement for the RailCats. Prior to his managerial career, the native of Vacaville, CA served as a scout with the Detroit Tigers and as Pitching Coach at the University of New Mexico. As a player, he pitched collegiately at San Francisco State University.
