Northcraft Dazzles as M-Braves Drop BayBears

Mississippi Braves News Release
Mobile, AL - Aaron Northcraft twirled a masterpiece on Monday night at Hank Aaron Stadium and the Mississippi Braves rolled to a 4-1 series-opening win over the Mobile BayBears.
Northcraft started the night with five scoreless innings, extending his shutout streak to 14 innings dating back to April 26. A sinker baller, Northcraft- with the exception of a lineout to the shortstop in the second- got nothing but ground balls and strikeouts through the first five innings of work.
And the Braves (14-17) provided plenty of support. In the second, Seth Loman led off the inning with a single and a steal of second, moving to third on a Matt Kennelly base hit. With men on the corners, David Rohm hit a sacrifice fly to right field off of starter AJ Schugel to give Mississippi a 1-0 lead.
In the third inning, the Braves made it 2-0 when Mycal Jones hit a one-out single and was forced out at second on a Gustavo Nunez ground ball. Elmer Reyes with two outs and two strikes smacked a double down the left field line to plate Nunez.
The BayBears (19-12) broke Northcraft's scoreless stretch in the sixth inning. Mike Freeman led off with the first fly ball allowed by the Braves hurler all night, caught by Rohm in right. Garret Weber tripled to the wall in center field and scored on a David Peralta ground out to short, cutting the Braves lead to 2-1.
That was all for Northcraft (3-1), who allowed just a run on four hits over 5 2/3 innings, tying his season high with six strikeouts in the winning effort. The right-hander has allowed just a run on six hits and one walk over his last 14 2/3 innings of work, picking up the win in all three outings.
The Mississippi offense bounced back and regrew the lead. Kennelly led off the seventh with a single off Schugel and Rohm drove him in with a double to make it 3-1 and extend his hit streak to a team-high eight games. With two out, Mycal Jones singled to plate Rohm and extend the lead to 4-1.
Schugel (2-1) suffered his first loss, allowing four runs- three earned- on seven hits over seven innings.
Ryan Weber pitched 1 2/3 scoreless relief innings for the Braves before Shae Simmons came on for his league-leading seventh save, throwing the final 1 2/3 scoreless innings with two strikeouts.
The Braves will try to keep the momentum going in Tuesday's second of five games, with first pitch slated for 7:05 PM CT. Right-hander David Bromberg (0-2, 2.60) takes the hill for the Braves against right-hander Chase Anderson (4-2, 0.69) for the BayBears.
