Norfolk Tides News Release
Jake Arrieta and Rick Zagone both turned in tremendous starts as the Tides held Durham scoreless over a doubleheader Wednesday night at Harbor Park.
In game one, Arrieta allowed two hits and a walk while striking out six to pitch Norfolk to a 1-0 win. He faced just two batters over the minimum in the complete game gem, as he needed 82 pitches to navigate his seven innings of work.
Arrieta (4-4) has now allowed four runs on six hits over his last 19.2 innings, as he's registered a 1.83 ERA over his last three starts. Over that span, he's struck out 22 while walking eight.
Norfolk plated the only run of the contest in the second inning, as Steve Tolleson led off the frame with a double and scored on a one-out single by Blake Davis. Tolleson finished with two of Norfolk's three hits in the win.
In the nightcap, Zagone and Greg Burke combined to hold the Bulls to four hits as the Tides rolled to a 3-0 win.
Zagone (2-0) was making his first start with the Tides since mid-May, when he tossed 11.1 shutout innings in a brief callup from Class-A Frederick. He continued to baffle IL batters Wednesday as he held the Bulls to three hits over five-plus innings, walking five while striking out three.
Zagone has now allowed eight hits over 16.1 shutout innings in his first action at the Triple-A level.
Burke worked the final two innings to earn the save, striking out a pair. He's now posted a 0.63 ERA (2-ER, 28.2-IP) since July 8.
Norfolk jumped out to a 4th inning lead on an RBI groundout by L.J. Hoes and a two-out RBI double by Ronny Paulino. The Tides extended their lead to 3-0 an inning later on a solo home run by Brandon Waring off of Durham starter Lance Pendleton (8-6).
The home run was Waring's 23rd of 2012, the most among Orioles farmhands this season. Waring belted 11 home runs with Double-A Bowie before being promoted to Norfolk, where he's slugged 12 round trippers.
The two wins snapped a five-game losing skid and put the Tides (70-69) a game over the .500 mark with five games left in the regular season.
The two clubs will wrap up their season series on Thursday night, with first pitch from Harbor Park slated for 7:15. Jason Berken (4-6, 3.61) is slated to take the hill for Norfolk against right-hander Matt Torra (12-6, 4.16).
