Norfolk Tides News Release
Joe Mahoney's three-run homer in the top of the 11th helped Norfolk outlast Scranton/WB 7-4 in game two of a doubleheader Sunday. Norfolk dropped game one, 4-0.
Norfolk began the decisive 11th inning rally with two outs, as Jamie Hoffmann sliced a double down the right field line for his third hit of the game. After Lew Ford worked a walk from Ryota Igarashi (0-1), Manny Delcarmen was summoned from the bullpen to face Mahoney. After falling behind 0-2, Mahoney launched a ball off the scoreboard in right-center field for his fifth home run of the season to give the Tides a 7-4 advantage.
J.C. Romero closed out the contest with a scoreless 11th inning to earn his first save of the season. Romero has yet to allow a run in his seven appearances with the Tides, as he's yielded two hits and two walks while striking out seven in 5.2 innings.
Trailing 4-2 entering the seventh, Norfolk knotted the contest courtesy of three walks and an error on a potential game-ending double play grounder. Brandon Waring, Blake Davis and Xavier Avery all drew walks off of Kevin Whelan, bringing up LJ Hoes with the bases loaded. Hoes hit a grounder to Corban Joseph at second, who flipped to Yadil Mujica at short to retire Avery for the second out of the inning. Mujica short-hopped his relay throw to first base, however, allowing both Waring and Davis to score and tie the game at 4-4.
Tides starter Eddie Gamboa turned in a solid outing after scuffling in the first frame. Gamboa yielded a three-run homer to Jack Cust in the opening inning, but settled down to face just two batters over the minimum over the next five frames. He yielded four runs on eight hits in six innings, striking out three without walking a batter.
Hoffmann got the Tides on the board in the bottom of the first with a two-run homer to left, his fifth long ball of the season.
Miguel Tejada had three singles in game two, raising his average to .339.
In game one, Adam Warren went the distance for the Yankees in a 4-0 victory. The Tides had a runner reach second base just once in the contest, as Warren (3-3) allowed five singles without walking a batter. The right-hander struck out six, throwing 60 of his 92 pitches for strikes.
Steve Johnson (1-4) took the loss for the Tides, as he yielded three runs on four hits in 2.2 innings. Johnson, who was making his first appearance since he strained his groin on May 19, walked two and struck out a pair.
Corban Joseph had a two-run homer to lead Scranton's offense, while Kevin Russo and Ronnier Mustelier each had two hits apiece.
The two clubs will wrap up their six-game, four-day series on Monday afternoon, with first pitch from Harbor Park set for 12:15. Brad Bergesen (2-3, 4.91) will take the mound for Norfolk against right-hander Dellin Betances (3-4, 5.30).
