Grand Slam Foils Otherwise Great Start by Wilk in 5-3 Loss

June 3, 2012 - International League (IL1)
Toledo Mud Hens News Release

It was a pitcher's game Sunday evening at Fifth Third Field until Matt Tuiasosopo connected for a grand slam in the sixth to give the Bisons a 5-3 victory over the Hens.

Starter Adam Wilk looked great through 5.1 innings, allowing just three hits, one walk and striking out four. Things got sticky when Eric Patterson misplayed a ball in left field to allow the Bisons to get a man on second and third with no outs. Wilk struck out the next batter, and then intentionally walked Valentino Pascucci to set up the double play. Tuiasosopo had other ideas though as he took Wilk's pitch deep to left-center for a grand slam.

The Hens put the leadoff man on in each of the first four innings, only to have double plays and strikeouts kill any opportunity to score. Ryan Raburn connected for the Hens' first runs with a bases loaded single in the sixth to cut the Buffalo lead to two.

Brad Emaus added another run for Buffalo with a solo homer in the ninth. Ryan Strieby responded with a solo shot of his own in the bottom of the inning to make it 5-3.

The Hens compiled nine hits to Buffalo's six, but the Hens stranded 13 runners on base en route to the loss.

The Hens wrap up their series with Buffalo tomorrow at 7:00 p.m. at Fifth Third Field. Top prospect Jacob Turner is set to take the hill to try and take three out of four for the Hens.

Game Notes

Brad Eldred extended his hit streak to nine with a single in the third.

The Hens went 1-for-13 with runners in scoring position.

Adam Wilk threw his fourth quality start on the year.
