EASTLAKE, OH - Ryan Noda and Brock Lundquist both crushed home runs, but the Lake County Captains (28-38) scored 11 unanswered runs in the middle innings on their way to an 11-3 romp over the Lansing Lugnuts (40-26) on Wednesday afternoon at Classic Park.
The Captains have won each of the first two games of the series, leaving the Lugnuts with a 5-7 record on their season-high 13-game road trip.
Noda blasted his seventh home run of the year - all since May 30th - to break a scoreless tie in the third inning. It also extended his hitting streak to 12 games. Chavez Young followed with a single off Lake County starter Jean Carlos Mejia and Brock Lundquist promptly lasered a two-run homer to right for a 3-0 lead. It was Lundquist's team-leading 11th roundtripper of the year, tying for most in the Midwest League.
The Captains answered in a major way, scoring three runs in the fourth and three unearned in the fifth (due to three Lugnuts errors) against Lugnuts starter Matt Gunter (Loss, 0-3), before blowing the game open with five runs in the sixth inning off reliever Kyle Weatherly.
Matt Shannon quieted the Captains for the seventh and eighth innings, but the Lugnuts were unable to push across any runs against Captains relievers Nick Gallagher (Win, 1-2), Skylar Arias and Kyle Nelson from the fourth inning onward.
Young led the Lugnuts with three hits in five at-bats, and both Lundquist and Samad Taylor drew two walks to pair with a base hit.
All-Star right-hander Maverik Buffo (4.95 ERA) goes to the mound in the finale at 7:00 p.m. Thursday, looking to prevent the sweep. Lake County counters with left-hander Kirk McCarty (6.44).
The Lugnuts have just three home games remaining in the first half: Family Faith Night with LAFCU Fireworks on June 15th, Star Wars Night with LAFCU Fireworks on June 16th, and a Father's Day Delta Dental Kids Day with a special Jersey Giveaway on June 17th!
