Corpus Christi IceRays News Release
Laredo, TX - The bad news for the Corpus Christi Rayz on Tuesday night was that they lost 4-0 to the Laredo Bucks. The good news is that they won't have to play Laredo again for a long time.
The Rayz played their final game of the season against their arch rival Bucks, and closed the year with a 2-11 record over Laredo. Steve Simoes had a goal and an assist and Marco Emond made 19 saves for his second shutout of the year as the Bucks beat the Rayz Tuesday night.
The first two periods were essentially mirror images of each other. In each of the first two frames, the Laredo Bucks tallied early on in shortened skating situations, and then the Rayz rebounded to play a back and forth period with the Central Hockey League's best team.
In the first period, 1:37 into the contest, Gabriel Proulx got his third goal of the season on a four on four skating situation after whacking home the third rebound chance in front of Rayz netminder Craig Hillier. The Rayz shook off the goal and came back to play the Bucks stride for stride for the rest of the period, cutting off the Bucks passing lanes and creating chances off of the turnovers. However, in the second period, it was once again an early Bucks goal catching the Rayz. 1:38 into the second period, Chris Grenville got his league leading 39th goal and 19th power play goal of the year, once again on a third rebound chance.
All season long, the Bucks have gotten stronger in the third, and Tuesday night was no different. The Bucks closed up with two goals in the final frame from Dion Hyman and Steve Simoes to go on to the 4-0 victory. The Bucks shutout the Rayz in consecutive games after not shutting them out all season and pushed the Rayz losing streak to four games. With thin win, the Bucks assured themselves of home ice advantage throughout the Southern Conference playoffs. The Rayz four game road trip will continue Friday night in Rio Grande Valley, and then Saturday night in Austin before returning home on Sunday afternoon for a matinee game with the Odessa Jackalopes. Good seats are still available. Call 814-PUCK for more information.
