New Jersey Jackals News Release
Little Falls, NJ - The New Jersey Jackals used a pair of sacrifice flies in the bottom of the ninth inning to defeat the Sussex Skyhawks 7-6 on Monday night at Yogi Berra Stadium.
With Sussex closer Duaner Sanchez on the mound and a light rain beginning to fall in the ninth, New Jersey loaded the bases with no outs. First baseman Jabe Bergeron's sacrifice fly tied the game at six before shortstop Mike DeJesus lifted a shallow fly ball to center and designated hitter Shawn Riggans scampered home ahead of Carl Loadenthal's throw with the game-winning run.
Left fielder Jacob Butler got New Jersey on the board with a two-run homer off the left-field light tower in the bottom of the first. The Jackals extended their lead to 3-0 on an RBI infield single off the bat of Riggans in the third inning.
>From there though, the Skyhawks scored the game's next five runs to take a 5-3 lead after starter Dan Griffin had held them hitless through three frames.
The Jackals got a run back in the bottom of the fifth when Bergeron launched a solo blast, his fifth home run in as many games, to cut the deficit to 5-4. The teams then exchanged runs in the eighth with catcher Jovan Rosa's RBI single pulling New Jersey back within one at 6-5.
Neither Griffin nor Sussex starter Jusef Frias factored in the win. Griffin allowed five runs on six hits in 5 2/3 innings while Frias went six and yielded four runs on six hits. New Jersey reliever Edgar Estanga (1-3) recorded the final out in the eighth and retired the side in order in the ninth to earn his first win while Sanchez (1-1) took the loss.
Bergeron went 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs. He finished a triple shy of the cycle.
The Jackals (17-25) and Skyhawks (22-20) continue their three-game series on Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. when New Jersey sends right-hander Nick Asselin (1-5, 6.56) to the mound against Sussex righty Mike McGuire (3-4, 5.29). Cody Chrusciel has the live call on the Jackals webcast beginning 10 minutes prior to first pitch at www.jackals.com.
