Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
WINNIPEG, MB - The Winnipeg Goldeyes lost 2-1 to the Kansas City T-Bones at CommunityAmerica Ballpark on Saturday night.
T-Bones' first baseman Anthon Gallas snapped a scoreless tie with a two-out, two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Adam Heisler led off the top of the ninth inning with a home run to centre field to cut the lead in half. Consecutive singles from Reggie Abercrombie, Jacob Rogers, and David Rohm loaded the bases with no outs. T-Bones' relief pitcher Aaron Baker worked out of the jam, recording back-to-back strikeouts before retiring Wes Darvill on a groundball to first base to end the game. Baker narrowly beat Darvill to the first base bag after receiving the ball from Gallas.
"We didn't hang our heads after the two runs were scored in the bottom of the eighth," said Goldeyes' hitting coach Tom Vaeth. Our guys went up there and battled. I really like the fight and competitive spirit we have."
Goldeyes' starter Mikey O'Brien had a strong outing, pitching four shutout innings on two hits. O'Brien walked two and struck out three in a no-decision, and has now logged seven scoreless frames this spring.
Duke von Schamann was charged with the loss, allowing two earned runs on five hits in four innings. von Schamann walked none and struck out two. von Schamann has worked seven innings in exhibition play on 84 total pitches.
"He (von Schamann) got ahead of guys when he needed to make pitches," said Vaeth. "I'm very pleased with his performance and with what Mikey did tonight. Mikey did everything we expected. He should be ready to go for opening night for sure."
Baker was the winning pitcher for Kansas City, having entered the game in the top of the eighth with the score still tied.
Kansas City starter Casey Barnes took a no-decision with five shutout innings on four hits.
To get in some extra work, the teams agreed to play the bottom of the ninth. Jailen Peguero pitched for Winnipeg and recorded a strikeout.
David Rohm had two hits for the Goldeyes, and twice robbed a T-Bones' hitter of extra bases. Rohm made a running catch toward the outfield wall to retire Robby Kuzdale in the bottom of the second, and pulled off a near identical play on Gallas in the third.
"He was really good tonight," said Vaeth. "He got some really good jumps on balls, and he was more aggressive at the plate tonight."
The exhibition series concludes Sunday afternoon at CommunityAmerica Ballpark at 1:05 p.m. All the action can be heard locally on 93.7 CJNU and worldwide at www.cjnu.ca
