St. Paul Saints News Release
FOREST LAKE, MN - It wasn't easy against the Forest Lake Brewers/Metro Minny All-Stars, but the Saints blew the game wide open late. On Saturday afternoon at The Ballpark at Schumacher Field the Saints won 9-2 in exhibition play.
The Saints used four different pitchers and they combined to strike out 16, 14 of them coming from starter Robert Coe.
Coe tossed 6.0 innings allowing two runs on seven hits and struck out 14. Coe, who is nine wins shy of the all-time Saints franchise record, struck out at least two in each inning he pitched.
Caleb Thielbar and Ryan Rodebaugh each tossed a perfect inning of relief while Chris Peacock through a hitless ninth inning.
The Saints trailed 2-1 in the top of the sixth when Tony Thomas clubbed his second homer of the spring, a solo shot to left, tying the game at two.
In the eighth, last season's Post-Season All-Star at first base, Angelo Songco, went opposite field with a solo home run to give the Saints a 3-2 lead. With one out Nate Hanson singled and, with two outs, Tony Caldwell walked. Tanner Vavra's RBI single gave the Saints a 4-2 lead.
The Saints pulled away in the ninth when Breland Almadova led off with a double and scored on Michael Burgess' RBI single to give the Saints a 5-2 lead. With two outs and a man at second Nate Hanson drove an RBI double off the left-center field wall to make it 6-2. Later in the inning, with the bases loaded, Tanner Vavra ripped a two-run single to make it 8-2. Alonzo Harris finished the scoring with an RBI single.
The Saints will continue exhibition play on Monday evening at CHS Field against the Sioux Falls Canaries at 7:05 p.m.
