Ninth-Inning Comeback Completes Sweep
August 9, 2015 - Florida State League (FSL1)
Daytona Tortugas News Release
Lakeland, FL - The Daytona Tortugas (63-48) mounted a ninth-inning comeback to complete a three-game sweep and defeat the Lakeland Flying Tigers (42-66) 2-1 on Sunday afternoon at Joker Marchant Stadium. Daytona has won eight of its last nine games, and has a 17-3 record over its last 20.
With the Tortugas trailing 1-0 in the ninth, DH Sebastian Elizalde grounded a leadoff single to right field. He then stole second, and was joined on base when 1B Chad Wallach drew a five pitch walk from Whit Mayberry (BS, 2)(L, 1-3). C Joe Hudson bunted the two runners into scoring position, and SS Carlton Daal was intentionally walked to load the bases. 3B Ronald Bueno tied the game at 1-1 with a sacrifice fly to center, but the big hit came from 2B Ty Washington, who rolled a two-out base hit to left field and scored Wallach from second with the eventual winning run.
Including his game-winning hit, Washington has reached in nine of his first 16 plate appearances as a Tortuga (.563 OBP) since being called up from Class-A Dayton last week.
RHP Jimmy Moran (W, 2-2) recorded three quick outs in the eighth but walked a batter before inducing a fly out in the ninth. He was removed in favor of RHP El'Hajj Muhammad (S, 15), who issued a walk of his own to put the winning run aboard. Lakeland had the tying run on third and the winning run on second with two away after a groundout and a wild pitch, but Muhammad wrung up Drew Longley to close it out.
For eight innings, a solo homer from Lakeland's Raph Rhymes stood as the game's only run. He took LHP Amir Garrett deep to lead off the sixth inning, providing one of just four hits off Garrett, who pitched seven innings while walking one and striking out three. The southpaw has held opponents to two runs or fewer in 18 of his 22 starts this season.
Flying Tigers starter Kevin Ziomek was just as good, giving up just three hits - two singles from Wallach and a triple from CF Junior Arias - in seven shutout innings.
Daytona pitching held Lakeland to 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position, and surrendered just four hits over Sunday's nine innings.
The team will now travel to Dunedin for a three-game series with the Blue Jays at Florida Auto Exchange Stadium. RHP Keury Mella (1-0, 1.80 ERA) is scheduled to make his second start as a member of the Reds organization, with Monday night's first pitch scheduled for 6:30 p.m. ET. Fans can listen to the game on The Great Voice of Volusia County, AM 1230 and AM 1490 WSBB, starting with the D.B. Pickles Pregame Show at 6:20 p.m. ET.
