York Revolution News Release
(York, Pa.) - After spotting Southern Maryland the first seven runs of the game, the York Revolution scored nine unanswered, coming back for an unlikely 9-7 win over the Blue Crabs on Wednesday night at PeoplesBank Park. The win was the Revs' (19-14) largest comeback in nearly six years and clinches a series win over the Blue Crabs (11-21).
Down 7-0 in the bottom of the third, the Revs wrangled a couple one-out walks off Southern Maryland starter Jon Leicester. After a strikeout, Telvin Nash singled to load the bases. That brought up Michael Burgess, who unleashed a liner over the big wall in right for a grand slam to make it 7-4 and swing momentum to York's side.
Michael Rockett chipped away at the Blue Crab lead in the fifth by poking a solo home run over the Arch Nemesis. His first home run of the year got the Revs within a pair at 7-5.
The Revs swung the score in their favor in the bottom of the sixth. Burgess banged a double off the Nemesis to start the inning and Andres Perez followed with a single to advance him to third. Bryan Pounds laced a double to the right center gap, scoring both runs to tie the game.
The double chased Leicester from the game, and Josh Wilson welcomed reliever Brian Grening to the game with a single. James Simmons followed with a gapper to right center that two-hopped to the wall, scoring Pounds and Wilson to give York an improbable 9-7 lead.
Micah Owings (2-1) buoyed York's comeback with 4.2 shutout innings in relief of starter Matt Neil. Inheriting a couple runners with one out in the top of the third, Owings induced a double play and proceeded to sit down Blue Crab after Blue Crab. The only hit he gave up was an infield single in the seventh inning that he worked around with ease. He walked one and struck out one on just 45 pitches.
Owings gave way to Julio DePaula for the hold in the eighth, and Mike DeMark followed with a scoreless ninth for his league-leading 10th save in 10 tries to send the crowd of 3,338 home happy.
Leicester (2-3) bore the loss after allowing eight runs on eight hits in five-plus innings.
Burgess finished 2-for-4 with the grand slam, while Pounds and Simmons each drove in two during the comeback. Joel Guzman tallied three hits, and Rockett and Nash added two of their own.
Bryant Nelson led the way on offense for the Blue Crabs, going 3-for-4 with three RBIs. D'Arby Myers finished a home run shy of the cycle with a single, double, triple, and two runs. Eric Garcia also drove in two on two singles.
Southern Maryland opened with a pair of unearned runs in the top of the first and followed with two in the next inning. Myers led off the second with a double, coming home on a Garcia single. After a sac bunt and a strikeout, Nelson notched a base hit to score Garcia and make it 4-0.
Myers got a third-inning rally going with a one-out triple, again scoring on a single by Garcia. A single and walk later, Nelson again came through with a two-run single to give the Blue Crabs a 7-0 lead that they would start to give back almost immediately.
Notes: The seven-run comeback is the Revs' largest home turnaround in team history and ties its largest overall, matching a 14-13 win at Long Island on July 15, 2010. Burgess has driven in seven runs in his first two home games with the Revs. York will turn to James Simmons to try and notch the sweep against Southern Maryland's Scott Snodgress on Thursday morning. Revs fans can catch the action live on SportsRadio 1350, woyk1350.com, and on the WOYK mobile app beginning at 10:50 a.m. with Darrell Henry and Will DeBoer on the call. Thursday marks another Baseball in Education Day with thousands of schoolchildren set to invade PeoplesBank Park for a day of learning and fun. Gates open at 10:00 a.m. and tickets are available at YorkRevolution.com, (717) 801-HITS, and in person at the Apple Chevrolet Ticket Office.
