Bees Walk off with Win vs. Barnstormers in 14th
May 25, 2016 - Atlantic League (AtL)
New Britain Bees News Release
(New Britain, CT.) In a wild, extra-inning thriller at New Britain Stadium, the New Britain Bees evened the three-game series on a walk-off RBI double by Kevin Rivers in the 14th inning to best the Lancaster Barnstormers 9-8.
PITCHERS OF RECORD
W: Shawn Gilblair (1-0) | L: Josh Wall (0-1)
With one on and two out in the bottom of the 14th, Rivers- who had started the game in left field and moved to first base in extras- lined a double against reliever Josh Wall off the right-center field wall, bringing home Craig Maddox all the way from first base with the winning run.
Rivers was only able to play the role of hero thanks to a furious rally by the Bees in the bottom of the ninth. Down 8-5 entering the inning, Jon Griffin got the rally going by launching a home run to left-center off Lancaster closer Cory Burns, cutting the league to two. After a Brandon Chaves RBI single cut the lead to just one, the Bees loaded the bases with one out. Jonathan Roof managed to plate Chaves with a sacrifice fly, sending the game to extras.
Much earlier in the game, Bees' starter Josh Outman pitched into the seventh inning for the second straight start, but struggled against the Barnstormers' pesky offense. The veteran left-hander allowed 11 hits in 6.2 innings, allowing five runs (only three of which were earned). Lancaster starter Austin Bibens-Dirkx also struggled, not making it out of the fifth inning after the Bees batted around, scoring four runs on five hits in the process.
New Britain and Lancaster finish off their three-game series tomorrow with a special 10:35AM start time for the Bees' third school day game this season. The Bees will send right-hander Brian Dupra to the mound to try to give the Bees the series win, while the Barnstormers will counter with a right-hander of their own in J.D. Martin.
Bees Buzz: Anthony Marzi helped save the Bees' bullpen for tomorrow with 3.2 scoreless innings in extras...Jon Griffin had perhaps his best game of the season, going 3-5 with two runs scored, three RBIs and a home run...The longest game in Bees' history was also the team's third walk-off win of the season...
