Portland Winterhawks forward Nino Niederreiter has been named to Switzerland's national junior team that is competing at the 2010 International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) World Junior Hockey Championship.

Switzerland's first game is this afternoon against the United States, featuring Niederreiter's Winterhawks teammate Luke Walker. The tournament runs until Jan. 5 in Saskatoon and Regina, Canada, and Niederreiter could miss up to five Winterhawks games to play in the tournament.

In his rookie season, Niederreiter has posted 23 goals and 18 assists for 41 points, a total that leads both the Winterhawks and all WHL rookies. He's tied for the league lead among first year players with five game-winning goals, and his 23 total goals leads the team and ranks second among WHL rookies. Earlier this week Niederreiter was one of three Winterhawks players selected to play in the NHL/CHL Top Prospects game next month along with Ryan Johansen and Troy Rutkowski.

"It's not common for 17-year-old players to be named to their country's world junior team, but it speaks to what a special talent Nino is that he has received such an honor," said Portland Winterhawks General Manager & Head Coach Mike Johnston. "He's been everything we could have wanted and more thus far in his rookie season, and we're excited he'll be displaying his talents on the world stage."
