Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Brandon, Manitoba -- Brandon Wheat Kings' center Brayden Schenn is one of sixteen finalists for the Brandon Sun's Krug Crawford Memorial Award for 2009.
The Award is presented annually to the western Manitoban who best exemplifies sporting excellence throughout the year. The winner will be announced in the Saturday, January 2nd edition of the Brandon Sun.
An 18-year old Saskatoon product, Schenn was last year's recipient of this award, becoming the third Wheat King in four years to be honoured with this prestigious award.
Schenn is currently among the club scoring leaders and is a member of the National Junior Team that has its sights set on winning a record sixth straight gold medal at the World Junior Hockey Championships in Saskatchewan.
This past year, Schenn led the club in scoring for the second straight season, finishing the year with 32 goals and 88 points and has fourteen goals and 49 points in 2009-10. A second Team WHL Eastern Conference All Star, Schenn was the fifth overall selection in last June's National Hockey League Entry Draft, going to the Los Angeles Kings.
Joining Schenn, who is the only hockey player to be nominated as finalists for 2009 include trapshooter Patrick Lamont, track and field star Delohnni Nicol-Samuel, Dany Charlery of the Brandon University basketball Bobcats, Virden figure skater Kaleigh Hole, baseball's Bret Heselwood of Brandon, 2-sport (volleyball, basketball) athletes Danielle DeGagne of Brandon and Kellie Baker (volleyball, softball), as well as volleyballers Lisa Barclay from Crocus Plains, Dauphin's Tabi Love and Paul Sanderson of the BU Bobcats.
Rounding out the list of nominees are local curling star Rob Fowler, rugby's Amanda Thornborough, syncronized skating star Tiffany Smith as well as two from the Manitoba rodeo world - 16-year old Landon Lockhart of Brandon as well as Deloraine's Colin Adams, the 2009 Manitoba Rodeo Cowboy Association's Bareback Champion.
As for Schenn and Team Canada, they'll take on Switzerland on Monday, after blasting Latvia 16-0 in Saturday's Tournament opener in Saskatoon.
The Wheat Kings meanwhile will bring the curtain up on the second half of their 2009-10 schedule with a 3-game WHL road trip, beginning Monday night in Swift Current against the Broncos. Brandon enters the game riding an 8-game winning streak and tied atop the Eastern Division with the Saskatoon Blades.
Brandon's next home game is Saturday night vs. Prince Albert. Tickets to the game will go back on sale Tuesday morning at the Keystone Centre box office, by calling 726-3555 or online at ticketmaster.ca.
