Normal CornBelters News Release

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. - After The Normal CornBelters (28-28) exploded for 16 runs last night against the Schaumburg Boomers (31-27), the tables turned as the Boomers evened the series on an 11-2 victory on Saturday night.

The Boomers didn't waste any time to get out to an early lead. They used seven consecutive hits, all singles to take a 6-0 lead in the first of starter Jack Landwehr. Normal made it 6-1 in the second on a Cody Erickson double that brought in Andrew Godbold who reached on a single. Schaumburg got the run back in the bottom half on a sac fly to go up 7-1.

James Davison Jr. made it 7-2 on his second hit of the game in the fifth that brought in Michael Baca who doubled. The speedy lefty added his third hit in the eighth and already has 10 hits with three straight multi-hit games.

"It's a different dynamic for us. He (Davison Jr.) gets on base and it allows us to take some pitches and give him chances to steal bases to get in scoring position with nobody out and that's what you want. We'll take that every game. Plays a very good centerfield, cover a lot of ground," said Manager Billy Horn.

Landwehr (4-3) went on to have his worst outing of the season after he won his last four starts. He gave up a career high in runs (7) and hits (9). The All-Star left the game in the second after he was hit by a line drive.

Thomas Nicoll made his third appearance and took over for Landwehr to finish the second. The former Florida A&M Rattler threw 3.1 innings of scoreless ball and has not allowed a run this season in 5.1 innings of work. He didn't allow any walks and picked up three strikeouts to add his total to seven.

"So far he (Nicoll) has been pretty good out of the bullpen, came just as advertised. The report on him was he throws a lot of strikes doesn't walk a lot of people and so far that is what he has done."

The next arm out of the bullpen was Tyler Frohwirth. Son of former major leaguer Todd Frohwirth, the submariner threw a scoreless seventh but gave up a bases-clearing double in the eighth to open the floodgates and give Schaumburg a 10-2 lead. Gerald Bautista replaced Frohwirth and made his Belter pitching debut to finish the eighth as the Boomers tacked on one more run to lead 11-2

In the ninth, J.J. Bissell picked up his first CornBelter hit after beginning signed on Wednesday. With the loss tonight Normal is now 1.5 games back from River City for first in the West and are now tied with Florence for second. Mark Hendricks (0-1) aims to win in the rubber match tomorrow at 1:00 p.m.
