Southern Illinois Miners News Release
Avon, OH - The Southern Illinois Miners had a couple opportunities to break up a scoreless pitcher's duel against the Lake Erie Crushers on Saturday night at Sprenger Stadium, but could not come up clutch, and the home team scratched across the only run of the game with two outs in the seventh inning as the Miners lost 1-0 to even their road series.
Austin Dubsky was outstanding on the hill for Southern Illinois, as the right-hander pitched six and two-thirds innings while allowing just four hits and two walks, striking out a career-best nine batters. But two of those hits came in the seventh inning- after a leadoff single by Sean Hurley, he stole second base. Dubsky (3-3) got the next two men out, but Byran De La Rosa's double just inside the third base bag brought Hurley home.
It was the only run of the night for either side, as the Crushers' Micah Beyer kept the Miners' bats off balance with 12 strikeouts in the first six innings. The Miners had a couple of chances to score against Beyer- they had runners at first and third base with only one out in the second inning, but the rookie used a strikeout and groundout to get out of trouble.
In the sixth, Nolan Earley led off with a double and Chance Shepard singled, putting runners at the corners with no one out. But again Southern Illinois came up empty, with two strikeouts and a popout keeping the game scoreless. The Miners out-hit Lake Erie in the game six to four, but were on the wrong side of the final margin.
Southern Illinois will seek a series victory in the rubber match at Sprenger Stadium at 1:05 p.m. against the Crushers, with Aaron Rozek on the mound against Lake Erie's Justin Sinibaldi.
The Southern Illinois Miners are the Frontier League's winningest franchise since debuting in 2007, winning the 2012 Frontier League Championship as well as division titles in 2010, 2014, 2015 and 2016. They have been awarded the Frontier League Organization of the Year award three times since their inception, and also set a new Frontier League attendance record in their inaugural season.
