HUNTSVILLE, AL - Jacksonville Suns left-handed starting pitcher Justin Nicolino has been named the Southern League Pitcher of the Week for the week of July 28 - August 3, announced by Minor League Baseball on Monday.
The 22-year-old finished the week by going 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA in two starts, allowing 12 hits across 14.0 scoreless innings of work.
The Southern League All-Star was outstanding in his second career complete game shutout, holding the Biscuits without a run on seven hits in nine marvelous innings of work on July 29th. The lefty struck out four batters and only needed 92 pitches to go the distance in July 29th's 1-0 victory in Montgomery.
The Orlando, FL native made it back-to-back wins by surrendering five hits over five shutout frames against the Huntsville Stars on August 3rd to earn his 10th win of the year. Just 72 pitches were required of Nicolino to get through those five innings as Jacksonville went on to defeat the Stars by a 7-1 final in Huntsville.
The left-hander is in the midst of a stellar 2014 season, holding a 10-3 record with a 2.84 ERA in his 23 Southern League starts. Nicolino ranks at or near the top of a slew of Southern League categories, with him standing first in WHIP (1.07), lowest walk rate (1.10 BB per 9 IP) and fewest base runners allowed (9.95 baserunners per 9 IP). Additionally, Nicolino ranks tied for first in the Southern League in wins (10) and complete games (two) while he ranks second in both ERA (2.84) and innings pitched (139.1).
This marks the second time that the 22-year-old has brought home Southern League weekly honors in 2014 (also took in Southern League Pitcher of the Week honors for the week of June 16 - June 23) and the third time overall in his career. In 2013, he was named as the Southern League's Pitcher of the Week for the week of August 12 - August 18.
With Nicolino garnering his second Southern League weekly honor, it now marks the fourth time a Jacksonville Suns pitcher has been named as the Southern League's Pitcher of the Week, joining Andrew Heaney (April 14 - 20) and Jay Rogers (July 14 - 21) as the only other Suns hurlers to win the award.
The Suns and Stars will be back at it on Monday, with first pitch of the series finale set for 1:00 p.m. CT (2:00 p.m. ET). The Suns will start right-hander Dustin Moseley (1-1, 3.46) while the Stars will counter with left-hander Brent Suter (9-8, 4.34).
Suns fans can listen to Monday's game on the Suns Baseball Network, 94.1 WSOS-FM or through www.jaxsuns.com, MiLB.com or the Suns iPhone or Android app, beginning at 1:45 p.m. ET with the Memorial Hospital Suns Pregame Show.
