Seattle Sounders FC News Release
SEATTLE, WASH. - Sounders FC midfielder Nicolás Lodeiro has been called in to the Uruguayan National Team for a friendly against Mexico on Friday, September 7 at NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas. Lodeiro joins Uruguay as a late addition following an injury to Giorgian De Arrascaeta and is eligible to play in Friday's match.
Lodeiro, 29, has 57 caps and four goals in his international career, including seven appearances across the 2010 and 2014 FIFA World Cups. He most recently was part of La Celeste's preliminary squad for this summer's 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, but failed to make the final 23-man roster. A big part of Uruguay's qualification for Russia, Lodeiro started four of eight appearances and scored the game-winning goal against Venezuela on October 6, 2016. Since returning to Sounders FC from Uruguay ahead of the World Cup, Lodeiro has seven goals and seven assists in 15 matches, helping Seattle to an 11-match unbeaten streak (9-0-2) dating back to July 4.
Lodeiro joins five other Sounders FC players on national team duty during the scheduled FIFA international break this week. Cristian Roldan (USA), Raúl RuidÃaz (Peru), Gustav Svensson (Sweden), Román Torres (Panama) and Jordy Delem (Martinique) all departed Seattle following Saturday's win over Sporting Kansas City.
After setting the single-season MLS record with its eighth consecutive win this past weekend over Sporting KC, Sounders FC returns to MLS play on September 15 in Vancouver, with a Cascadia Cup showdown against Whitecaps FC (7:00 p.m. PT / JOEtv, YouTube TV, 950 KJR AM, El Rey 1360 AM).
