Nichols Leads WhiteWings Past Broncos

Laredo, TX - From Bronco Brian Nichols went 3-5 with two RBI and three runs scored as the first half champion Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings (37-34, 8-13) broke out the bats to beat the the Laredo Broncos (30-41, 10-12) 11-3 tonight at Veterans Field.

The WhiteWings got on the board against Juan Jimenez (0-1) right away. With two outs in the first, Miguel Peguero walked, Ryan Fox singled, and Luany Sanchez walked to load the bases. Alejandro Martinez hit a two-run double to make it 2-0.

The WhiteWings followed up with a barrage in the second as Brian Nichols led off with a triple and Kevin Griffin followed with an RBI-double. John Beal executed a sacrifice bunt and Bub Bergstrom hit an RBI-double to make it 4-0.

Ivan Reyes responded for the Broncos with a three-run home run against Julian Williams (3-4) in the bottom of frame, his 10th of the season, making it 4-3.

Nichols answered for the WhiteWings in the top of the third as he hit a long two-run home run over the right field wall for make it 6-3. It was Nichols' fourth of the season, third as a WhiteWing, and second against his former teammates.

The WhiteWings continued to pour it on the fifth as they batted around. Martinez and Nichols led off with singles. Griffin tried to bunt them up a base each, but Cameron McGuire threw the ball away, allowing Martinez to score, Nichols to go to third and Griffin to second. Beal came up with a sacrifice fly to send Nichols home. One batter later, Omar Bramasco knocked out Jimenez with a long two-run home run over the left field wall, his tenth of the season, making it 10-3.

All of the offense allowed Williams to go into cruise control. He ended up going six and third innings, his second longest outing of the season, allowing three runs on seven hits with two walks and eight strikeouts.

Sanchez got hit first WhiteWings hit when he belted a solo home run to left in the eighth against Kyle Gibson.

The WhiteWings and Broncos complete the series tomorrow night at 7:30. Angel Cordero (0-0) is expected to face Santo Hernandez (8-2).
