San Angelo Colts News Release
EDINBURG, Texas - After losing to the Edinburg Coyotes 1-0 on Tuesday, the San Angelo Colts-with help from Mother Nature-returned the favor on Wednesday night. The Colts blanked the Coyotes 1-0 in a rain-shortened, seven-inning game for their league-leading seventh shutout. The Colts now have a two-games-to-one series lead heading into the series finale on Thursday.
The Colts manufactured a run in third when Eric Harryman led off with a single and advanced to second base on a wild pitch by Coyotes starter Jan Carlos. Wyn Diggs grounded out to second to move Harryman to third base and Ronnie Gaines hit a sacrifice fly to right field to bring Harryman home with the first and only run of the game.
San Angelo right-hander Luke Massetti (6-3) won his second straight start, throwing seven scoreless innings, allowing just five hits with six strikeouts and one walk. Carlos (0-2) took the loss, allowing one run on only two hits with five strikeouts and four walks in six innings of work.
Massetti now has two complete-game, shutout victories versus Edinburg, as he first blanked the Coyotes over nine innings on June 22 at Foster Field.
The Colts turned two inning-ending double plays in the game, but neither were conventional and both involved Edinburg's star shortstop Neilson Teilon, who was 3-for-3. In the fourth, Teilon was at second base with one out after his second double of the night. The inning ended abruptly though when the next batter, Alexis Hernandez, hit a fly ball to deep left-center field. Ronnie Gaines ranged far to his right to make the catch and then threw out Teilon trying to tag up to third base.
In the bottom of the seventh (with the rain already falling), Teilon was at first base after leading off the inning with a single. Hernandez hit a fly ball to right field for the first out, and Adam Bonner hit a shallow fly ball to left field for the second out. However, after the catch, Teilon was jogging back to first when left fielder Bryce Morrison fired a one-hop throw to Andres Rodriguez. The throw arrived just before Teilon stepped on the bag to complete the double play and extinguish the Edinburg threat.
Right after the close of that inning, the tarp was placed on the field and the game was called approximately 15 minutes later.
The Colts continue their longest road trip of the season at 7:05 p.m. on Thursday, July 26, when they take on the Edinburg Coyotes in the finale of this four-game series. The Colts return to San Angelo on Monday, July 30 to begin a seven-game homestand.
