Nicholas Notches Walk-Off Hit in Indians Win
Spokane, WA -Brett Nicholas capped off a thrilling Father's Day at Avista Stadium with a walk-off single in the bottom of the 9th to lead Spokane past Salem-Keizer 4-3.
Hanser Alberto led off the inning with a double and advanced to third on an error from Volcanoes third baseman John Eshleman. With runners on the corners and two out, Nicholas ripped a fastball from Volcanoes reliever Brennan Flick (0-1) past a drawn in infield, scoring Alberto and sending Indians fans home smiling.
Nicholas finished the game 4-5 with a double, home run, and three RBI's. Alberto went 3-5, Ruben Sierra contributed two hits including a run scoring double, and Jorge Alfaro, Braxton Lane, and Ryan Rua all had one hit.
The Indians benefited from a strong start by Santo Perez, who pitched five innings, allowing just two runs on two hits. Will Lamb made his Spokane debut in the 6th inning, striking out the side and touching 95 mph with his fastball. Francisco Mendoza (1-0) struck out four Volcanoes in two innings of work.
The Indians held an auction of the special blue jerseys worn by the players today, with proceeds benefiting prostate cancer awareness. The results of the auction will be announced at a later date.
