Indians Defeat Volcanoes & Mother Nature in 7-2 Win
Spokane, WA - On a cold and rainy evening at Avista Stadium, a crowd of 6,209 braved the elements and enjoyed a Yoke's Family Feast Night spread of Pepsi products, hotdogs, and ice cream sandwiches, as the Indians captured their first win of the 2011 season.
Carson Vitale ignited a 6-run fourth inning with a sharp single to left field after batting back from an 0-2 count against Salem-Keizer starter Brandon Allen (0-1). Vitale's single scored Jorge Alfaro and opened the floodgates for the Indians offense.
Braxton Lane, who went 3-4 in his Spokane debut, followed with a check-swing single that scored Guillermo Pimentel. Lane advanced to third on a single from Rougned Odor and then scored on a wild pitch from Volcanoes reliever Matt Graham. Hanser Alberto capped off the inning with a two run double that just escaped the reach of centerfielder Shawn Payne.
Indians starter Victor Payano went four innings and allowed no runs on two hits, but it was Juan Grullon (1-0) who got the win with two scoreless innings of relief. Kyle Hendricks got through the seventh inning unscathed and third baseman turned reliever Matt West closed the door in the ninth, thrilling the Spokane crowd with a blistering fastball that touched 97 mph.
The Indians are home again tomorrow night for game three of a five game series with the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes.
