Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
Waterloo, Iowa-The National Hockey League's Central Scouting service released its mid-season report ranking players eligible for the 2014 Draft on Monday, and five current Waterloo Black Hawks players made the roster of North American prospects.
Defensemen Mark Friedman, Cooper Watson, and Brandon Montour, plus forwards Tyler Sheehy and Lawton Courtnall, were all noted in the group of just over 200 prospects currently skating in the U.S. or Canada. A final ranking is anticipated in April before teams make their selections during the June event in Philadelphia. Approximately 210 players will be chosen during the seven-round affair.
Friedman leads the collection of Waterloo players on the midterm chart, ranking 133rd. The veteran blue-liner is tied for the USHL scoring lead among defensemen with 27 points in his first 31 games. Last season, the Bowling Green recruit played in every Black Hawks game, recording eight goals and 27 assists. Friedman owns a career plus/minus mark of +39 for Waterloo.
Sheehy is the Hawks' highest-slotted draft-eligible forward at #150. Despite making his season debut for Waterloo at the beginning of November, the Burnsville, Minnesota, native ranks third on the team with a dozen goals and has averaged better than a point per game during his appearances (24 points in 21 games).
Watson also joined the Hawks after the season began, with his first appearance on December 13th. In six USHL games, the future Michigan Tech Huskies defenseman is +2. Central Scouting ranked Watson 173rd.
Montour is just two points behind Friedman and holds down third place in scoring among league defensemen with 25 points. The Oshweken, Ontario, native and University of Massachusetts recruit owns Central Scouting's 186th midterm position. Montour -like Friedman - is one of four Hawks to have played in all 31 games so far this season and is +11.
Courtnall spent the opening weeks of the year on injured reserve, limiting his exposure to scouts. He has one assist in 13 games since coming back to full health. Central Scouting tagged the Westlake Village, California, native #211.
Two current Black Hawks - Zach Sanford and Cal Petersen - were chosen during the 2013 NHL Draft. In total, NHL teams called seven players with ties to Waterloo last June.
