Youngstown Phantoms News Release
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - In recognition of his stellar offensive weekend, Phantoms forward Kyle Connor was named the co-CCM Forward of the Week, the USHL announced today.
Connor, 17, totaled five points over Youngstown's two games last weekend. He had one assist against Muskegon on January 10, and he followed that up with his first career USHL hat trick on January 11 against Team USA. He added an assist in that contest for a career-high four-point night.
Further illustrating Connor's offensive acumen, the future Michigan Wolverine has also recorded at least two shots on goal in every game he has skated in this season, a streak that he extended with three shots against Muskegon and six against Team USA.
"Bottom line is, with Kyle, if he wants to be great, he's going to be great. Everything there is there for him," said Phantoms Head Coach & General Manager Anthony Noreen, immediately following the match against Team USA.
"I give him credit.he goes out and has a pretty good game [against Muskegon], and the first thing he asks me after the game was, 'hey, can we go over some more video tomorrow?' We did it again, and I thought he really has seen the difference between just being offensive and playing a really hard, 200-foot game," added Noreen.
Connor's three-goal game snapped a seven-game goalless drought for the Shelby Township, Michigan native. He has recorded at least one point in 21 of 27 games played in 2013-14.
"Once you get into a rhythm, it's about habits and playing the way you did each game, every night. I think I'm starting to get back into that," said Connor after the game against Team USA.
Connor leads the Phantoms in total scoring with 39 points, and is currently tied for fourth in the League in that regard. He becomes the second Phantom to earn a league Player of the Week honor this season, joining JJ Piccinich, who won the CCM Forward of the Week award for the week of September 30-October 6.
