Newsom Claims Pitcher of the Week Honors

June 2, 2008 - Eastern League (EL1)
Akron RubberDucks News Release

AKRON, OH - Aeros closer Randy Newsom was named Bank of America Eastern League Pitcher of the Week today for the week ending June 1st. He is the second Akron player to receive a weekly award this season after LHP David Huff won the award for the week ending May 18th.

Newsom recorded two wins, three saves, and posted a 1.80 ERA in five appearances last week.

"It's definitely a team award," Newsom said. "Our team battles back and we came out with a couple of wins. It's really the guys behind me playing defense and the offense bailing me out for a couple of fluke wins, so it's definitely a team honor."

Newsom's two wins were of the same variety last week. On Memorial Day against Erie and Friday against Bowie, the side-arming right-hander entered the ninth with a one-run lead, but the SeaWolves and Baysox were able to tally a run to tie the games. Friday's run was the first earned run Newsom has allowed since April 6th. The offense rallied for walk-off wins in the bottom of the ninth of both games to give Newsom and Akron the victories.

Newsom also picked up a trio of saves this week with a pair coming at Harrisburg, and a dominating performance Saturday against Bowie at Canal Park. Newsom entered with a 3-1 lead and struck out the 3-4-5 (Luis Montanez, Jeff Nettles, and Nolan Reimold) part of the Baysox order to snag his league-leading 16th save.

Newsom is 16 for 18 in save opportunities this season with a 3-0 record and a 1.09 ERA in 25 appearances. Newsom, 26, became the Aeros all-time saves leader earlier this season and he now has 34 in his Akron career. The Indians acquired the Tufts University product in the 2006 trade that sent Coco Crisp and Josh Bard to Boston for Andy Marte and Kelly Shoppach. As an Eastern League All-Star last year, Newsom appeared in 46 games for the Aeros and was 4-1 with a 3.12 ERA and 18 saves.

The Aeros start a six-game, two-stop road trip beginning at 7:05 p.m. Tuesday night in New Hampshire. Akron sends Frank Herrmann (5-3, 4.68 ERA) to the mound against Fisher Cats left-hander Brett Cecil (0-1, 4.63 ERA). The game broadcast begins at 6:50 p.m. on SportsRadio 1350 AM and online at www.akronaeros.com. For more information, please call the Aeros at (330) 253-5151.
