
Eastern League Announces Bank of America Weekly Award Winners

PORTLAND, ME - The Eastern League is pleased to announce the Major League Baseball Advanced Media selections for the Bank of America Eastern League Pitcher and Player of the Week Awards for the week ending June 1st:
New Hampshire Fisher Cats outfielder Ryan Patterson has been named the Bank of America Eastern League Player of the Week for the week ending June 1st. Patterson had an excellent week for the Fisher Cats hitting .448 (13-for-29) with one double, five home runs, 10 RBI, eight runs scored, four walks, and a 1.000 slugging percentage in seven games. The 25-year old had a hit in six of the seven games he played in during the week and hit a home run in four of the seven games, including a 4-for-5 performance with two homers, four RBI and three runs scored in a 12-5 win over Portland on Saturday night. The Dallas, Texas native is hitting .297 for the Fisher Cats this season and is tied for first in the league in extra-base hits (26) and ranked second in doubles (18). Ryan, who hit .267 with 18 homers in 111 games with New Hampshire last season, was selected by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 4th round of the 2005 draft after hitting .369 with 20 home runs and being named First Team All-SEC as a junior at Louisiana State University.

Randy Newsom, a right-handed relief pitcher for the Akron Aeros, is the Bank of America Eastern League Pitcher of the Week for the week ending June 1st. The 26-year old appeared in five games for the Aeros last week and recorded three saves and two wins with a 1.80 ERA in five innings of work. Newsom, a native of Cincinnati, Ohio, appeared in three straight games to close out the week for the Aeros and capped the week off by striking out the side while facing the heart of the Bowie order in a 3-1 victory at Canal Park on Sunday. With his performance last week the 6'2", 200 lb. hurler increased his league-high save total to 16 and he also is tied for the league lead in games pitched (25). Randy, who recorded 18 saves and was named to the Southern Division Roster for the 2007 Eastern League All-Star Game as a member of the Aeros bullpen last season, was acquired by the Cleveland Indians on July 20, 2006 as the player to be named later from a trade with the Boston Red Sox on January 27, 2006.
