Newark Pilots News Release
The Newark Pilots (6-6) defeated the Glens Falls Golden Eagles (10-3) by a final of 7-6 in arguably their biggest game of the young Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League (PGCBL) season.
Glens Falls entered the contest as the #1 rated team in the league, and even garnered a national ranking among the best collegiate teams in the country. But on Monday night, the Pilots landed in East Field Stadium and edged the Golden Eagles by one run.
Newark took a 1-0 lead in the opening frame on a groundout RBI from Kyle Attl (Cal State Northridge). Catcher Kevin Alexander (Dallas Baptist) responded with a two-run home run in the bottom of the second inning for the Golden Eagles.
Pilots' starting pitcher Edwin Reyes (UAB) didn't give up another run through the five and one- third innings he hurled, allowing his team to gain a two-run lead before he left the mound.
Glens Falls pitcher Dylan Baker (Tacoma C.C.) walked two batters to load the bases in the fourth. Newark's Adam Grace (Genesee C.C.) drew a third consecutive walk, scoring Randy Villa (San Joaquin Delta) to regain the lead 3-2. Villa slapped a RBI single in the fifth to go up 4-2.
In the top of the seventh, the Golden Eagles began to look like their usual selves. Zac Hawkins (LSU-Eunice) led the comeback with a two-run double to go up 5-4. Hawkins scored an unearned run later in the inning. Glens Falls went through three Newark relievers in the seventh, as it appeared the Pilots' bullpen was about to give up yet another win.
With one last chance in the ninth, the Pilots found themselves with another bases-loaded situation. Villa hit another RBI single, scoring Michael Bolling (Lewis). Newark nearly took the lead in the next at-bat when Kyle Barkley (Finger Lakes C.C.) singled home Ray Delvalle (Kentucky Wesleyan) to tie the game at 6-6, but Attl was thrown out at the plate. The game- winning run was scored by Villa on a hit from Luke Swenson (UC Santa Barbara).
Kegan Banks (Blinn) earned his first save of the season by shutting the door on the Golden Eagles in the bottom of the ninth. Reliever Matt Frahm (Lewis) earned his team-best third win of the season. Villa, who leads all PGCBL batters with a .386 batting average heading into Tuesday's games, recorded three hits and three RBI's.
David Olsen (Tacoma C.C.) received the loss after giving up the game-winning run in the ninth. Hawkins finished with two hits, two runs, and two RBI's.
The Newark Pilots stay on the road as they travel to Amsterdam to open their three-game series against the Mohawks at 7:05 p.m. on Tuesday. The Glens Falls Golden Eagles head to Elmira for their two-game road series against the Pioneers.
