Mohawks Bomb Pilots Before the Rain

Amsterdam Mohawks News Release

The Amsterdam Mohawks secured their sixth win of the year with an 8-0 drubbing of the Newark Pilots at Shuttleworth Park in a game that was called after five innings due to thunderstorms.

Kris Barone (Mt. Olive) started for the Hawks and turned in the best outing by any Amsterdam hurler this season after he went five innings while allowing two hits and striking out four.

The righty retired the first 10 Pilots he faced before Ray Delvalle (Kentucky Wesleyan) cracked a one-out double into the right centerfield gap in the fourth. Kyle Attle (Cal State Northridge) then roped a single to put Barone in his first jam of the night. The next hitter was Randy Villa who chopped a high one-hopper back to Barone who fielded it with his bare hand fired home to Kody Ortman (Auburn) to cut down the runner at the plate.

Nick Boles (Kutztown) took the mound in the top of the first for the visitors and did not make it out of the frame. However, Boles was not the only deficient Pilot in the field, the team committed three errors en route to an eight-run Mohawk first.

Josh Alexander (Utah ) singled to start the game and then a flurry of errors hampered the Pilot defense. Demarcus Henderson (Mississippi State) dropped down a sacrifice bunt and third baseman Matt Vera (San Joaquin) bobbled the roller and allowed Henderson to reach. The next batter, Zach Shank (Marist) had the same objective as Henderson and this time it was the pitcher Boles who was unable to field the shortstop's bunt and the bases were loaded.

Ortman stepped up with the bags full and no one out and stung a sharp ground ball towards second baseman Ray Delvalle but the ball slid under his glove and into rightfield, allowing the first two runs to come across.

One out and a walk later, Taylor Stark (Mississippi State) stepped up with the bases loaded and smoked a double off of Vera' s glove at third and drove in the second pair to make it 4-0. The next batter Josh Netheway (Albany) roped a single of his own to drive in two more and run the score to 6-0.

That was all for Boles as he was lifted after one third of an inning. Jim Glasgow (Lewis) was first out of the pen and allowed an infield single to Jack Fischer (Wake Forest), a walk, and then a fielder's choice to set up perhaps the wackiest play of what was a peculiar home half of the first.

Zach Shank came to plate for the second time in the inning with two outs and runners on the corners. When he swung at strike three in the dirt, he took off for first base, catcher Greg Shworm (Finger Lakes C.C.) fired to teammate Randy Villa (San Juaquin Delta) who was off of the bag at first, Netheway sprinted home from third and Henderson headed for second. Vera fired to shortstop Attle and retired Henderson but not before the eighth run of the inning crossed the plate.

In protest of the call, Newark Head Coach Chris Ebright came out of the dugout and exchanged words with home plate umpire Derrick Gonzalez who eventually ejected the coach from the ballgame. It was the third consecutive day that umpiring tandem of Gonzalez and Scott Stevenson had ejected a participant in Perfect Game League action.

The game was stopped before the top of the sixth and the remainder of the contest was canceled after a 24 minute rain delay.

Kris Barone (1-1) gets the win and Nick Boles (0-1) is tagged with the loss. 894 spectators watched the Mohawks move to 6-8 and the Pilots slide to 6-7. The same two teams will play tomorrow evening at Shuttleworth Park beginning at 7:00 PM.
