New York controlled most of the play and nearly took the lead in the 22nd minute, as forward Saer Sene put an onside Peguy Luyindula through on goal. Luyindula took a touch to try and round goalkeeper Luis Contreras, but Contreras was able to block away the Frenchman's ensuing shot.
Twelve minutes later, the Red Bulls earned a penalty kick. Midfielder Ambroise Oyongo won possession deep in C.D. FAS' defensive half and was fouled in the box by Raul Renderos. However, Sene's spot kick sailed over the crossbar.
New York kept up the pressure in the second half and Oyongo forced Contreras to go down to catch his shot five minutes into the interval. In the 85th minute, the Red Bulls had a golden opportunity to get the game-winner. Substitute Eric Alexander played the ball to Oyongo on the left wing and the Cameroonian's cross was headed by an open Ruben Bover. But Bover's shot on goal went straight into Contreras' arms.
