CARSON, Calif. (Thursday, Sept. 25, 2014) - Chivas USA striker Erick "Cubo" Torres was named the second best rising talent on Major League Soccer's annual "24 Under 24" list presented by adidas, the League announced today via MLSsoccer.com. In its fifth edition, "24 Under 24" highlights the league's top players under the age of 24, while exploring the most successful stories in youth development in MLS.
Determined by a panel of soccer media members from the U.S. and Canada, Torres was selected from a list of 50 players who were rated based on their technical and physical ability as well as their soccer IQ, personality and future potential.
The 21-year-old Guadalajara native holds the MLS scoring record among Mexican-born players with 21 tallies in 40 appearances since joining the Red-and-White in July of 2013. Torres claimed the club's Golden Boot Award in his first MLS season, and since then, has continued to add to his accolades by representing Chivas USA in the 2014 AT&T MLS All-Star Game, in addition to being named the league's Latino de la Jornada on numerous occasions.
The talented striker earned his first call-up to the Mexican National Team and made his debut with the senior squad in a 1-0 victory over Bolivia on Sept. 9, where he played the full 90 minutes under Coach Miguel Herrera's instructions. On Monday, Torres received his second call-up to participate in Mexico's preparation matches against Honduras and Panama on Oct. 9 and 12, respectively.
Prior to reporting to El Tri's camp, Torres will suit up for Chivas USA when they visit Western Conference foe Seattle Sounders FC on Saturday in the third and final leg of the season series. The match will be televised on KDOC-TV LA56 and Time Warner Cable Deportes beginning at 1 p.m. (PT) and can also be heard on ESPN Deportes Radio KWKU 1220 AM.
