New York Red Bulls News Release

New York Red Bulls defeat Charlotte FC in the Eastern Conference Wild Card match, 5-2, at Red Bull Arena.

New York opened the scoring ten minutes in, after midfielder Daniel Edelman lifted a ball over the Charlotte defense and found forward Elias Manoel, who took a touch and found the back of the net for an early lead.

The Red Bulls doubled their advantage in the 26th minute, when defender John Tolkin placed a perfect free kick over the Charlotte wall and into the top corner.

New York took a three goal lead in the 37th minute after Tolkin found Manoel in the box, who curled a shot around the Charlotte goalkeeper to secure his brace.

Charlotte scored their first of the match at the start of the second half in the 49th minute from an overhead kick off the foot of Kerwin Vargas.

The Red Bulls answered seven minutes later, starting Tolkin played another ball into the middle of the box, this time finding forward Tom Barlow, who placed a shot to the far post to regain a three goal lead.

Charlotte scored their second of the match in the 64th minute when Patrick Agyemang tapped one home to put his side within two.

New York's fifth and final goal would be the third of the match from Elias Manoel, who received a pass from Luquinhas and buried one past the Charlotte goalkeeper.

The three goals from Manoel were his first, second, and third of the Audi 2023 MLS Cup Playoffs and his fifth, sixth, and seventh goals of the season across all competitions.

The Brazilian now has six career goals in four career appearances against Charlotte FC.

Manoel has recorded two career mutli-goal matches this season across all competitions, both of which against Charlotte FC.

Manoel became the first Red Bulls player to record a multi-goal match in a playoff match since Daniel Royer did so on November 11, 2018 against Columbus Crew.

His hattrick was the first in the playoffs in club history. It was the sixth recorded playoff hattrick in MLS history.

Manoel scored the fifth multi-goal game by a Red Bulls player this season across all competitions.

Edelman posted his second and third assists across all competitions; he has now recorded two goals and three assists in his career with the Red Bulls.

The goal from Tolkin was his first of the Audi 2023 MLS Cup Playoffs.

Tolkin has now scored four goals this season across all competitions, which is tied for third for most goals scored by a defender in a single season across all competitions.

The Chatham, New Jersey, native has scored seven career goals across all competitions (5 MLS, 1 Audi 2023 MLS Cup Playoffs, 1 Open Cup).

Tolkin became only the second defender in club history to score a goal in the playoffs, joining Tim Parker who was the first.

The goal from Barlow was his first of the Audi 2023 MLS Cup Playoffs and his fourth of the season across all competitions.

Barlow now has two MLS Cup Playoff goals in his career, his first since 2019 against Philadelphia Union.

New York has posted a 13-2-3 mark across all competitions when scoring the first goal of the match this season.

The Red Bulls have posted a 4-0-0 mark in Wild Card matches in franchise history and have posted a 3-0-2 mark this year at home in all other competitions excluding MLS regular season.

Tolkin's two assists were his ninth and tenth of the season across all competitions.

Tolkin broke the franchise record for most assists in a single season by a homegrown in franchise history with ten, passing Tyler Adams (2018).

The two assists from Luquinhas were the first two of his career in the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs and his fifth and sixth of the season across all competitions.

Tolkin, Edelman, and Luquinhas became the first Red Bulls players to register a multi-assist match in a playoff game since Thierry Henry against D.C. United on November 2, 2014.

Defender John Tolkin made his 100th career appearance across all competitions.

The five goals tonight from New York are the most scored in a playoff game by the club in franchise history.

The New York Red Bulls extended their win streak to four matches and are now 4-0-0 in the month of October.

New York Red Bulls advance to Round One of the Audi 2023 MLS Cup Playoffs and are set to face FC Cincinnati on Sunday, October 29th at TQL Stadium with a kickoff time set for 8 p.m. ET.
