Oklahoma City Comets News Release
Oklahoma City, Okla. - The New Orleans Zephyrs (48-45) used the long ball to keep the Oklahoma City RedHawks (53-39) at bay in a 10-8 win in front of 10,104 at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark on Friday night.
New Orleans didn't waste any time getting on the board as centerfielder Kevin Mattison hit a home run on the second pitch of the game.
Oklahoma City responded in the bottom half of the first on third baseman Matt Dominguez's two-run single. The RedHawks tacked another run on in the bottom of the second on Carlos Corporan's long home run to right field to make it 3-1.
Oklahoma City starter Brian Bass struggled in the third inning. Bass allowed seven of the nine batters he faced in the third to reach base. Gil Velazquez and Luke Montz chipped in with RBI-singles. First baseman Gaby Sanchez did the most damage with a bases-clearing double. All in all, the Zephyrs scored five runs and knocked Bass out of the game in the process.
Bass pitched 2.2 innings, giving up 6 runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out four.
Sergio Perez replaced Bass and was able to get Mattison to fly out to end the third inning. Perez threw three scoreless innings of relief while giving up five hits and a walk.
While Perez was keeping New Orleans in check, Oklahoma City clawed back into the game. In the fourth inning, centerfielder Brandon Barnes hit an RBI-double that scored Corporan for the second time of the game. The RedHawks added two runs in the sixth as J.B. Shuck hit an RBI-double and was later brought home on Fernando Martinez's RBI-single to tie the game at six.
Both teams didn't score again until a wild eighth inning. New Orleans third baseman Mike Cervanek hit a three-run shot over the left field wall to give the Zephyr's a 9-6 lead.
The RedHawks responded quickly in the bottom half of the inning. Angel Sanchez started the inning with a double and scored on Corporan's third hit of the game. After a walk and a sacrifice bunt, Corporan scored on a groundout by shortstop Marwin Gonzalez, cutting the lead to 9-8. Fernando Martinez grounded out to second base to end the threat.
The Zephyrs' added to their lead in the top of the ninth on a solo home run by Donnie Murphy. Murphy's ninth home run of the year made it 10-8 New Orleans.
New Orleans brought in Chris Hatcher to pitch the bottom of the ninth. Hatcher struck out Brett Wallace and then hit pinch-hitter Travis Buck on the shoulder. Matt Dominguez popped up to the shortstop for the second out and Angel Sanchez lined out to second base to end the game and give Hatcher his fifth save of the season.
Dan Jennings (1-2) got the win for New Orleans, while Mickey Storey (7-3) picked up the loss.
