Round Rock Express News Release
ROUND ROCK, Texas - Adron Chambers' two-run single keyed a four-run ninth inning as the Memphis Redbirds defeated the Round Rock Express 5-3 in Saturday night's Pacific Coast League action at The Dell Diamond. The Express (39-55) have lost four straight and nine of their last 10, as well as five straight at home. The Redbirds (35-59) clinched the series with the win and lead the season series 6-5.
With one out and runners at first and second, Ryan Jackson bounced a Johan Yan offering in front of the plate. Yan fielded the ball, looked to second, spun and threw to first. However, his throw was well wide of the bag, allowing Cedric Hunter to score. Chambers followed with his two-run single, and Shane Robinson capped the frame by scoring Chambers with an RBI single.
Round Rock threatened in the bottom of the ninth. Brad Nelson clubbed a one-out solo homer, his second of the night. Yangervis Solarte then singled, and Joey Butler followed with a double that pushed Solarte to third. Tommy Mendonca scored Solarte on a groundout, and Dusty Brown walked to bring the potential winning run to the plate. However, Eduardo Sanchez induced a Greg Miclat flyout to end the game.
Sam Freeman (1-2) was credited with the win after pitching a perfect eighth inning. Sanchez picked up his eighth save. Starter Shelby Miller tossed five shutout innings on one hit and three walks with four strikeouts.
Neal Cotts (0-1) was saddled with the loss in relief; he allowed two runs on no hits and three walks over one and one-third innings with one strikeout. Starter Justin Grimm allowed one run on two hits and three walks over four innings with two strikeouts in his first career Triple-A appearance.
Alexi Ogando and Koji Uehara both looked sharp in rehab outings. Ogando allowed one hit and no walks with three strikeouts over two scoreless innings, while Uehara surrendered a single with one strikeout and no walks in one inning.
Hunter doubled to open the second and later scored on Bryan Anderson's sacrifice fly. Nelson tied the game in the sixth with a two-out solo homer. That snapped a stretch of 26 and two-thirds scoreless innings for the Express at The Dell Diamond. Nonetheless, Round Rock was held to four or fewer runs for the 11th consecutive home game. The Express scored fewer than seven runs in 25 of their last 27 games regardless of location and 23 of their last 24 home games. Round Rock scored in four of its last 45 innings at The Dell Diamond.
Butler extended his hitting streak to seven games, while Julio Borbon (0-for-4) snapped a six-game streak.
Robinson was 3-for-3 for the Redbirds, who managed only five hits on the night.
Round Rock and Memphis conclude their four-game series Sunday with a 7:05 p.m. CDT first pitch at The Dell Diamond. Rangers right-hander Neftali Feliz will make a three-inning rehab start for the Express with right-hander Greg Reynolds (7-6, 5.01 ERA) scheduled to follow. Right-hander Brandon Dickson (4-8, 3.58 ERA) is slated to start for the Redbirds.
