New Mexico Scorpions News Release
[ LAREDO, Tex. ]-The Scorpions put 42 shots on net but were downed by Laredo 3-2 Friday night. The same two teams will face-off tomorrow night at the Laredo Entertainment Center.
The Scorpions put an emphasis on getting out to a fast start and that's exactly what they did. Andrew Smale put a rebound, power play goal home at the 3:42 mark giving the Scorps the 1-0 lead.
In a penalty filled opening period, Laredo got a late first period, two-man advantage. The Bucks made it work when Chris Korchinski scored with on 11.8 seconds remaining in the opening period.
Laredo came out fast and furious in the second period. James Hiebert found an open Jeff Bes inside the Scorpions' zone, and Bes gave the Bucks their first lead of the game. The home team extended their lead at the 11:13 mark when Andrew Dejardins scored his 3rd goal of the season.
The Scorps fought back as Craig Macdonald raced into the offensive zone and put the puck towards the net. A hard charging Mitch Stephens was able to get his stick on the puck and tip it over goalie Dustin Traylen making it a 3-2 game. New Mexico had a chance to tie the game with 2:05 to go in the middle period, but Macdonald's penalty shot attempt was turned away.
The Scorpions had chances in the third period but were not able to score. Traylen stole the show for Laredo making 40 saves helping the Bucks to the victory.
