New Jersey suffers worst loss of 2004

Little Falls, NJ – It was not New Jersey's night, as nothing went their way. Bangor capitalized on a shaky outing by the Jackal bullpen, pounding the Jackals 22-2.

The Lumberjacks took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, thanks to Jose Garcia. Garcia singled to lead off the ballgame. He then stole second, and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Brad Hargreaves then grounded out, allowing him to score.

Bangor would distance themselves in the fourth, against New Jersey reliever Dave Therneau. Mike Davis scored on a wild pitch, and Mark Burke singled scoring Derry Hammond. Later in the inning, Brian Baker hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Hammond. Through four innings, the Lumberjacks led 4-0.

The offensive barrage would continue in the top of the fifth. A two RBI single with the bases loaded by Hammond made it 6-0, Bangor.

They sent 12 batters to the plate in the fifth, while scoring six more runs. This included a two RBI single by Paul Powell. All of the runs were off Jackals ' reliever Lou Wieben.

New Jersey finally broke through in the bottom of the six. With two outs, and the bases loaded, Scott Goodman dunked a single into left field, scoring two.

But Bangor would touch up Wieben for five more runs in the seventh. Wieben walked Hargreaves with the bases loaded. Derry Hammond then cranked a grand slam to right field, putting the Lumberjacks ahead 15-2.

They would put together another big inning in the top of the eighth. The Lumberjacks scored seven runs in the inning, including a three-run homerun by Hammond. It was his second homerun of the ballgame, to overtake the Northeast League lead. After eight, Bangor led 22-2.

Brad Whitworth suffered the loss in only three innings of work, after being forced out of the game due to injury. He gave up only one earned run, on one hit, while walking one. The Jackals bullpen of David Therneau, Lou Wieben, and Evan Neiser surrendered a total of 21 runs.

Jerry Long was awarded the win for Bangor in five and two thirds innings of work. He was peppered with five hits, leading to two earned runs. He also walked three, and struck out four.

For Bangor, Jose Garcia was 5-6 with four runs scored and three RBI. Derry Hammond went 4-6 with two homeruns, four runs scored, and nine RBI. The nine RBI is a Northeast League record.

Scott Goodman went 1-4, for New Jersey, with two RBI.

Playoff tickets are currently on sale for the 2004 season. The Jackals have already clinched a spot, after winning the first half South Division Championship. Their opponent is yet to be determined. The ballclub will be playing at Yogi Berra Stadium on Wednesday, September 8, and Thursday September 9, 2004. Both game times are scheduled for 7:05 p.m. If necessary, a deciding game five will be played on Sunday, September 12, 2004, with a 5:05 p.m. start. New Jersey will only host this game if they win the second half. Box seats are $11.00 and reserved seats are $9.00. Lawn seats are priced at $6.00, but will only be sold if both box and reserved seats are sold out. No discounts or coupons will be accepted during the playoffs.

Come to March of Dimes Night at Yogi Berra Stadium, on Thursday, September 9, 2004. 50 percent of your ticket price will be donated to the March of Dimes. It is also game two of the first round, of the 2004 Northeast League Playoffs. The Jackals' opponent has yet to be determined. The North Essex Chamber of Commerce will host a Meet, Greet and Barbecue business networking event on Wednesday September 1, 2004, at 6 p.m, at Yogi Berra Stadium. The event is prior to the 7:05 p.m. start of a game between the New Jersey Jackals and the Elmira Pioneers. The $30 fee includes a BBQ buffet at Jackals' Park, a ticket to the ballgame, and unlimited draft beer and soda until the seventh inning. New Jersey Jackals' shortstop Chris Rowan eclipsed the team record for homeruns as a member of the ballclub, on Friday, August 7, 2004. Rowan hit his 29th as a member of the Jackals, and 17th of the 2004 season, eclipsing Travis Bailey's record of 28. On Thursday August 12, 2004, Rowan also broke the league record for grand slams in a season. In an 8-5 win over Quebec, Rowan belted his third grand slam of 2004 in the bottom of the eighth inning.

On Tuesday, August 3, 2004, Jackals' starting pitcher Aaron Myers was named the Rawlings Northeast League Player of the Month. Myers went 4-1 in the month of July, with a 1.06 ERA. In 34 innings of work, Myers scattered 29 hits while striking out 38. Also during the month, Myers tossed a complete game, seven inning shutout of the Elmira Pioneers, in which he struck out eleven batters. At the time of the award, Myers was second in the Northeast League in strikeouts with 75.

The game scheduled between the New Jersey Jackals and the Elmira Pioneers on Wednesday, August 4, 2004, was suspended due to rain, entering the bottom of the third inning. New Jersey held a 3-0 lead over Elmira, partially due to a two-run homerun by Jay LaFlair. Because of the rain, the Elmira grounds crew worked till after the scheduled start time to get the field playable. The game did not get underway till after 9:00 p.m. The game will be continued on Wednesday, September 1, 2004, at 5:00 p.m., at Yogi Berra Stadium. The first game will begin in the bottom of the third, and will go a full nine innings. The second contest will be seven innings.
