New Haven County Cutters News Release
(Elmira, NY- August 29, 2004) The New Haven County Cutters rebounded nicely from their bad loss on Saturday night, pounding the Elmira Pioneers 9-0 at Dunn Field on Sunday afternoon. The Cutters finish up their series with Elmira and their road schedule on Monday night at 7:05pm.
New Haven jumped out to an early lead, scoring twice in the bottom of the first. It appeared Elmira starter Julio LaSalle would get out of the inning unscathed when Luis Santiago was thrown out at the plate by right fielder Steve Checksfield for the second out of the inning, but Jimmy Hurst then delivered a RBI single to right, scoring P.J. Johnston for the game's first run. Later in the inning with the bases loaded, LaSalle uncorked a wild pitch allowing Hurst to score and the Cutters had a 2-0 lead.
The Cutters added three more runs in the fifth as with two on and nobody out, Adam Shorsher doubled off the left field wall scoring Hector Lebron and giving New Haven a 3-0 lead. Billy Rich then smacked an opposite field two-run single extending the lead to 5-0.
New Haven put the game out of reach in the sixth, tagging Pioneers' reliever Matt Elfeldt for four runs in the inning. Hector Lebron got things going with a RBI double scoring Luis Santiago who led off with a walk. Jimmy Hurst then collected his second RBI base hit of the day, making it a 7-0 game.
Third basemen Jeff Brooks continued his hot hitting, capping off the inning with a long two run homer, his fourth of the year, extending the lead to 9-0.
Tim Keinath picked up his first win as a starter this season, tossing a complete game four hit shutout to improve his record to 4-7. It is Keinath retired 17 of the final 18 hitters he faced to pick up his first victory since July 12th. Elmira starter Julio LaSalle (5-5) takes the loss, allowing five runs and eleven hits in five innings.
Catcher Adam Shorsher reached base six times, going 3-for-3 with two singles, a double, a pair of walks, and a hit by pitch. Third basemen Jeff Brooks finished the day 4-for-5 with two singles, a double, and a two-run homer.
The Cutters conclude their series with the Elmira Pioneers on Monday night at 7:05.
