New England Revolution News Release
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - The New England Revolution will open the 2009 season with a road match at the San Jose Earthquakes during "First Kick" weekend on Saturday, March 21, Major League Soccer announced today. The league also announced that the Revolution will play its 2009 home opener on Saturday, April 4, against FC Dallas at Gillette Stadium.
The Revolution and Earthquakes will meet at Buck Shaw Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif., at 10:30 p.m. ET, one of seven games in the league's opening weekend of play.
In Week 2, the Revs will travel to play the MLS Cup runners-up and rival New York Red Bulls on Saturday, March 28. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J.
The Revs will open their 15-game regular-season home schedule in Week 3. On Saturday, April 4, the Revs will host Dallas, a team against which New England has won four straight at home and seven of the last eight overall, dating back to the 2004 season. The Revolution also defeated Dallas to win the 2007 U.S. Open Cup.
"The Revolution and Major League Soccer have grown tremendously in our first 13 seasons, and we're looking forward to kicking off our 14th year," Revolution General Manager Craig Tornberg said. "There have been a lot of great changes in the competition format this offseason, and next season is already looking to be the most competitive in MLS history.
"Not only has the league grown, but each MLS city has developed exciting fan support. After two tough road matches to open 2009, we'll be looking forward to April 4 and playing at home in front of the best fans in the league," Tornberg said.
Broadcast information for the 2009 season will be released at a later date.
