FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - The New England Revolution continue their 2023 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup campaign in the Round of 32 against USL Championship side Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC at Gillette Stadium on Tuesday, May 9 at 7:30 p.m. ET. The first competitive meeting between the two sides will stream live on the U.S. Soccer Federation's YouTube channel. Tickets for the Tuesday night match are on sale now.
The Revolution, winners of the 2007 U.S. Open Cup and three-time finalists, advanced to the Round of 32 with a 2-1 victory over Hartford Athletic in the Third Round on April 25. Justin Rennicks and Dave Romney provided the scoring, while goalkeeper Earl Edwards Jr. logged four saves in the victory. Rennicks was one of five Homegrown Players to start the match, a new high for the club, alongside Damian Rivera and a trio of 18-year-old Revolution Academy products in Esmir Bajraktarevic, Noel Buck, and Jack Panayotou.
On Tuesday, New England has an opportunity to extend its undefeated run to 10 games in all competitions. The Revolution are currently riding an eight-game unbeaten streak in MLS regular season play, with five wins and three draws since their only loss of the season on March 12. New England sits in first place on the Supporters' Shield table with 24 points through 11 games, the second-best start in team annals at this stage of a season. The Revolution have also yet to lose at home with a 5-0-2 mark in Foxborough, including cup action.
In New England's Third Round victory over Hartford, Carles Gil notched the game-winning helper. Gil is averaging 2.73 goal contributions per 90 minutes with three goals and three helpers across three U.S. Open Cup appearances. Brandon Bye also has three assists in the tournament, putting the duo one behind Pat Noonan (4) for the most U.S. Open Cup assists by a Revolution player. Revolution midfielder Latif Blessing, who won the tournament with Sporting Kansas City in 2017, has also enjoyed a successful U.S. Open Cup career with five goals and three assist in 15 appearances. Blessing returned to action over the weekend at Toronto, playing 29 minutes off the bench.
Pittsburgh, fresh off a 2-2 draw at Monterey Bay FC on Friday in league play, advanced to the Round of 32 with a 2-0 win over Maryland Bobcats FC on April 25. Former Revolution SuperDraft selection Edward Kizza tallied the go-ahead goal off the bench in the 81st minute, with Burke Fahling capping off the scoring late in second-half stoppage time. Former Revolution II players Trevor Zwetsloot and Michael DeShields also featured in the match for Pittsburgh.
