April 24, 2023 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
New England Revolution News Release
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - The New England Revolution will begin its campaign in the 2023 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup in the Third Round, hosting USL Championship side Hartford Athletic for a 7:30 p.m. ET kickoff at Gillette Stadium on Tuesday, April 25. The first competitive meeting between the regional opponents will stream live RevolutionSoccer.net and the club's YouTube channel, with Brad Feldman and Clyde Simms calling the action.
The Revolution, winners of the 2007 U.S. Open Cup and three-time finalists in the tournament, enter this year's competition after reaching the Round of 16 in last year's tournament. Hartford Athletic advanced to the third round by way of a 3-0 win over local qualifier Lansdowne Yonkers FC on April 5. Tuesday night's match marks the first official match between the Revolution and Hartford. New England owns a 9-3-3 record against USL clubs, including a 6-2-1 mark at home. This season, the Revolution have yet to be defeated at Gillette Stadium, boasting a 4-0-1 record in MLS play while outscoring opponents 11-2 in Foxborough.
The Revolution are unbeaten in six straight league games, with a 4-0-2 record since March 18, and currently sit atop the MLS Supporters' Shield standings with 20 points. New England has reached the 20-point mark after nine games for the third time in club history, last achieved in 2021 when the club posted an identical 6-1-2 start on the way to an MLS-record 73 points. The Revolution defeated Sporting Kansas City, 2-1, at Gillette Stadium last Saturday night, with forward Giacomo Vrioni tallying his first MLS brace to give the Revolution their sixth win in nine games. Hartford, led by former Houston Dynamo FC Head Coach Tab Ramos, enters Tuesday's match on the back of a bye week, last playing to a 2-1 victory at Oakland Roots SC on April 15.
New England has maintained its defensive form, having conceded only eight goals in nine games, tied for the club's second fewest at this stage of a season. The team's eight goals conceded are tied for the fifth fewest in MLS, while the club has allowed only two goals in five home games to start the season. Andrew Farrell has stepped back into a starting role for the last two games in place of an injured Henry Kessler. Farrell, already the club's all-time leader in games, starts, and minutes, has played 14 career U.S. Open Cup matches for the Revolution, closing in on the club mark of 17 (Diego Fagundez). Center back Dave Romney leads all Revolution players with 15 games played in the tournament.
The champion of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, a single-elimination tournament and the nation's oldest domestic cup competition, earns a berth in the 2024 Concacaf Champions League. The tournament has long been a proving ground for rising talent, especially Homegrown Players. In addition to experienced veterans, Tuesday's match could also see the club's trio of teenage contributors Noel Buck, Esmir Bajraktarevic, and Jack Panayotou continue to see action, as well as more established local products Justin Rennicks and Damian Rivera. All five of these Revolution Academy graduates played in the Revolution's 2-1 win over Kansas City last Saturday.
