Frederick Keys News Release

On Memorial Day at Harry Grove Stadium, the Keys fell just short of an incredible ninth-inning comeback. Frederick plated three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning but stranded the tying run on second base as CF Xavier Avery flew out to leftfield to end the game. Myrtle Beach starting pitcher, RHP Julio Teheran was dominant on the afternoon as he struck out a Pelicans franchise record, 14, over eight-shutout innings. The Keys fell to 29-22 while Myrtle Beach improved to 17-34.

Through five innings, both starting pitchers were untouchable. LHP Nate Nery allowed just one hit over the first five innings but the Keys did not have a lead to show for it. In the top of the sixth, Myrtle Beach plated three runs against Nery. C Matt Kennelly led off with a double down the leftfield line. CF L.V. Ware followed two-run homerun to left-center. Ware's homerun was first in a Pelican uniform. Two batters later, 3B Dan Nelson hit a solo blast to give the Pelicans a 3-0 lead.

Nery settled down and finished with a career-high eight innings pitched. On the day, he allowed three earned runs on five hits.

The Keys could not give Nery any run support and Julio Teheran was completely dominant. Teheran allowed six hits on the afternoon but did not allow one-run in eight innings of work. His 14 strikeouts were a career-high and also set a Myrtle Beach franchise record. In just his third Carolina League start, Teheran improved 2-0 and lowered his ERA to 0.43.

After Myrtle Beach scored an insurance run in the top of the ninth, the Keys had some serious work to do. With one down in the ninth, 2B Miguel Abreu got his third hit of the afternoon to start the rally. After a Billy Rowell strikeout, SS Greg Miclat walked to set the stage for 3B Buck Britton. Britton singled home Abreu for the first Frederick run of the day. C Brian Ward followed the Britton RBI single with a two-run double off the base of the leftfield wall. CF Xavier Avery was the next Keys batter to come to the plate. Avery belted a pitch deep to leftfield but Cole Miles was there to track it down for the final out of the day as the Keys fell 4-3 to the Pelicans.

The Keys and Pelicans will reconvene Tuesday night for the second game of the three-game set. RHP Oliver Drake (1-1, 4.19) will start for Frederick while the Pelicans will toss LHP Matt Crim (2-3, 4.35). First pitch is set for 7:00 p.m. on Guaranteed Win Tuesday. If Keys do not win, you can reuse your ticket for any Monday-Thursday game throughout the season.
