THE HILLCATS: Yesterday the Hillcats beat the Keys 7-2 in the deciding game of a three-game series at City Stadium...The Hillcats and are now 2-1 on their current six-game homestand and have won two straight series...
VS. SALEM: The Hillcats are 2-5 against the Red Sox thus far this season and are 1-2 at City Stadium...The Cats went 10-10 against the Sox in the 460 series last season and were 5-5 at Lewis Gale Field...In the post-season the Cats swept the Sox three games to none in the Mills Cup Championship...In the all-time series Salem leads 160-139 during the regular season, and they are 68-80 in the Hill City...
DAYLIGHT COME AND ME WAN' GO HOME: Lynchburg was 2-10 in day games this season before their 7-2 win yesterday against Frederick...The Hillcats had lost nine day games in a row before the took the afternoon affair over the Keys...The Cats have also won to series finales and rubber matches in a row...They were 1-12 in series finales and 1-4 in the deciding games of series before those two victories...
CHUTES AND LADDERS: The Hillcats went win less in their first five series of the season (0-4-1), then they won three straight sets, before they went win less again for five series (0-4-1)...Now with their win yesterday over Frederick, the Cats have won back-to-back series headin into their set with the Sox...
YOUMAN'S EFFORT: Yesterday Lynchburg's available bullpen basically consisted of one person yesterday, RHP Lance Janke...He tossed five innings and allowed two runs in picking up his second victory of the season...Janke and RHP Brad Boxberger combined to throw the entire nine innings...Thanks to 21 innings of baseball on Saturday night in the doubleheader with Frederick, Lynchburg was limited to only having one pitcher available in relief (LHP Andrew Bowman could have been used in an emergency)...Essentially every Hillcats pitcher out of the bullpen was used on Saturday...Janke did not pitch, but he was scheduled to start on Tuesday before his relief appearance yesterday...It was the longest outing by a Cats reliever this season...
PUNCHING BAG: Saturday night UTIL Neftali Soto had a night it would seem he would like to forget...In the doubleheader he was stolen on five out of five times in game one when he caught, had an error, could not block two wild pitches, got hit by a pitch, was picked-off second base, dropped a pop-up in foul territory (was not charged with an error though), went a combined 0-for-8 with three strike outs and left a total of eight men on base (seven in game two)...
DOUBLE TIME: UTIL Cody Puckett smacked his team-leading 18th double of the season yesterday...He is now second in the league in the category...He is also first in extra-base hits (26) and tied for fourth in slugging percentage (.538) in the CL...His teammate OF Josh Fellhauer is two doubles behind Puckett and is tied for fourth in the circuit...Lynchburg as a team is only two behind Winston-Salem for the most two-baggers in the league...
IT'S COOL, I'LL SPOT YOU: RHP Jordan Hotchkiss made his first start of the season in the first game of the doubleheader on Saturday and he worked three scoreless innings and struck out six in the outing...The right-hander started five out of his 33 appearances last year with Low-A Dayton., the only starts in 83 games prior to Saturday night..Hotchkiss is now 3-0 with a 1.38 ERA (four earned runs in 26 innings pitched)...
NO JET LAG: C Kevin Coddington flew into Lynchburg on Saturday night to join the Hillcats...He arrived at Lynchburg Regional Airport at 9:55 p.m. and entered the game as a pinch-hitter in game two of the twin bill just past the ten o'clock hour...He was intentionally walked in the 12th inning and then stayed in the game as the catcher...Yesterday in his first start with the Hilclats he went 2-for-3 with an RBI, a run and a walk...
RING âEM UP, SIT âEM DOWN: LHP Donnie Joseph was promoted to Lynchburg on Thursday from Low-A Dayton and Saturday night he made his Advanced-A debut...The left-hander struck out the first five men he faced and tossed two and 1/3 perfect innings of relief...While with the Dragons this season he went 2-1 with a 0.78 ERA (two earned runs in 23 innings of action) with six saves in 19 relief appearances...The third round draft pick from last year's draft was tied for third in games pitched (19) in the Midwest League, tied for third in games finished (16), third in batting average against amongst reliever (.160), first in strike outs per nine innings pitched (15.65) and was third in fewest base runners per nine innings pitched (7.83)...
TODAY'S OPPOSING PITCHER: RHP Alex Wilson was selected in the second round of the 2009 draft out of Texas A&M University...His junior season and his only year with the Aggies he went 6-6 with a 4.22 ERA and two saves in 24 games (eight starts)...Last year he made his professional debut with Short Season Low-A Lowell and went 0-1 with a 0.50 ERA in 13 starts with the Spinners...This year he began with Salem and has posted a 2-1 mark with a 3.38 ERA in nine starts for the Red Sox...Tonight will be his first start against Lynchburg...
