Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release
MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp right-hander Nick Neidert struck out a season-high eight batters in six innings, and third baseman Brian Schales had two hits and two RBIs to lead Jacksonville to a 6-3 win over the Montgomery Biscuits in the opener of a five-game series at Montgomery Riverwalk Stadium Saturday night.
The Jumbo Shrimp (13-21) took the lead with a second-inning leadoff home run by first baseman Skyler Ewing off Biscuits left-hander Genesis Cabrera (x-x). Designated hitter Kyle Barrett then tripled down the right-field line and later scored on a sacrifice fly by shortstop Chris Diaz. With two outs in the top of the third inning, Jumbo Shrimp left fielder Cade Gotta, playing his first game against his former team, singled to center field and scored on Schales' RBI double to deep center field for a 3-0 Jacksonville lead. The three earned runs matched the season high allowed by Cabrera, who entered with the Southern League's lowest opponents' average (.137) but allowed six hits and two walks with two strikeouts in five innings.
Neidert (x-x) shut out Montgomery (14-20) for the first four innings, retiring 10 straight batters and 13 of 14 in one stretch. With two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning, right fielder Nathan Lukes doubled to right field and scored on shortstop Jermaine Palacios' RBI single. Catcher Brett Sullivan led off the sixth inning with a solo home run to right-center field, trimming Jacksonville's lead to 3-2. Center fielder Ryan Boldt then tripled to put the tying run at third base, but Neidert struck out left fielder Nick Solak, second baseman Brandon Lowe, and first baseman Dalton Kelly to keep the 3-2 lead.
After Neidert, left-hander Jose Quijada began the seventh inning by allowing an infield single to designated hitter Mike Brosseau, who reached second base on Quijada's errant throw to first base. Quijada retired the next three batters to preserve the lead. In the top of the eighth inning, Gotta reached on a fielder's choice, and Schales singled to center field, where Boldt misplayed the ball, allowing Schales to score for a 5-2 Jumbo Shrimp lead. The Biscuits got an eighth-inning run off Quijada, as Sullivan tripled and scored on Boldt's sacrifice fly, but Jacksonville answered with center fielder Monte Harrison's ninth-inning home run to center field. Left-hander Jeff Kinley pitched a scoreless ninth inning for his first save.
UP NEXT: The Jumbo Shrimp continue their series in Montgomery at 3:05 p.m. Sunday, when Jacksonville right-hander Pablo Lopez (0-0) is scheduled to face Biscuits right-hander J.D. Martin (4-2). The Jumbo Shrimp return home Thursday for Budweiser Thirsty Thursday, with $1 12-oz. and $2 24-oz. beers at select locations, plus $1 sodas at the main concession stands. For National Police Week, Jacksonville Sheriff Mike Williams will throw a ceremonial first pitch, and police vehicles and trucks will be on display at the ballpark.
